This is an extreme rationalization. This is the same justifiication that most of the TV evangelists use...

Gore leaves a King Kong sized footprint of energy consumption on the planet: from his mansion to his Lear to his fleet of cars.

We are all hypocrites in some way, but I don't think it's wise to be the kind of hypocrite that flaunts your pet message.

He offsets that which he cannot eliminate. He's been doing that since 2006, IIRC. Look it up, if you like. I'm not here to play Gore-defender all day.

    Cannot eliminate?

How about a 2400 SF house, sensible cars and public, commercial airfare?

Wants to be Ghandi but acts like Benny Hinn.... :D

Maybe in a crisis they should? Pretty sure there are no weapons and/or terrorists on board. Gore and his posse on commercial air would be good for the economy. Don't be bound by tradition in a time of crisis, now...

Just because you didn't think of it first is no reason to call me stupid. :D

Nobody said that. It's more like Richard Simmons pimping for Baskin-Robbins or The Cheesecake Factory.

He does fly commercial air - this was explained to you in a thread earlier this summer. So if you're not being stupid, then you're just being a tool.

well there you go, even more impressive. I just hate the fact that some people argue that this guy is being an opportunist, you may not agree with this guy's position on a lot of issues, he's no opportunist. he has a passion for this issue.

You know, I hear this a lot, but no one ever really says exactly what this means.

How exactly does Gore 'offset' his own self-admittedly large contribution to the world's pollution? What exactly is an 'offset'? And has anyone ever studied these 'offsets' to determine that they do anything at all?

I am really curious. I know there are companies out there, such as Gore's, who make money by 'selling carbon offsets', but it seems to be accepted with an essentially religious faith that these 'offsets' are somehow magical carbon-reducing miracles which somehow negate the 'carbon footprint' of the people who buy them.

    But how?

And while we're on the subject, why do these 'offsets' need to be 'bought' anyway? If we have some kind of miraculous 'carbon offset' which can negate the 'carbon footprints' of egregious polluters like Gore, then the planet already has its answer, and can easily be saved, right? Why do the hyper-wealthy polluters such as Gore only want to offset their own 'carbon footprints', when they could easily buy a hundred times as many magic 'offsets'? After all, this is not all about money, right? It's about 'saving the planet'. Heck Al, if it's not all about money, teach us masses how to make our own 'offsets'. If nothing else, why haven't the governments of the world begun mass-producing these magic 'offsets' in order to 'save the planet'? Which is what it's all about, right? It's not just about money after all..

Seriously, if I take a hundred dollars, and buy a 'carbon offset', where does that money go exactly, and what exactly have I bought?

a company who produces renewable energy gets a credit. different states have different requirement on how much of your production has to be from a renewable source. some companies have credits that they can sell to companies who aren't meeting their requirements and then other companies offer products that you can request to have your energy from these renewable sources and if not the company will buy the credit from another company so even if your power didn't come from a renewable source, you can pay for a renewable source from somewhere.

if the power can't come from a renewable source there's nothing he can do about that except "offset" its

I'll just ignore you continued immaturity highlighted by continuous insulting and name-calling. I don't want to make too much of one video, but here's one: http://minx.cc/?post=239869

Is that Al Gore's double? I don't remember any conversation about this that I've participated in. If I did, you didn't convince me with your "explanation."

LearJet Liberals are an undeniable species. Leonardo DeCaprio drives a hybrid 3000 miles per year to Starbucks. Whoopee!! Just watch the video.

So did Gore change because he got caught? Maybe he did; I don't follow his habits to a tee. What a leader? Shouldn't he have been the first to give some of these things up?

For doing what he could/should have done in the first place to remain consistent with his relentless, other-oriented message?

Proven wrong? I've got video! Do you have discarded boarding passes?

I really don't doubt that Gore has modified his traveling behavior but it is because he got called out for it not because his conscience told him to.

What about the rest of his lifestyle? Benny Hinn or Ghandi?

    Lost argument? Feigned outrage?

According to this blog, Al Gore's home consumes 19 times the amount of electricity that the average American home does: http://www.stltoday.com/forums/view...ewresult&sid=6a3358ac36e704d3a8eaac77bc36326c

Is this the "Animal Farm" argument? Some animals are more equal than other animals...

Quit calling solid accusations strawmen; deal with them.
