They're bad at times but at least they do give props when deserved. These other guys just flat out bash the other teams.
Can't defend anything regarding Drexler - he's an embarrassment calling the game, even after several seasons. But no playcallers anywhere come close to Tommy Heinsohn. It's like watching games with someone's alcoholic uncle from Boston. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8xhQH4U3biM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mo5qzOrdPvY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ka7D6RUAXJg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/PQLMEDlFnV4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4DK_IHlp-tE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Listen, after having to watch innertubes games this year and being subjected to crews in other cities, suddenly our crew sounds down right professional, on point and occasionally funny as hell. ( unintentionally half the time of course......) some of those teams are so bad it's terrifying.
First off, while I agree that Schumann doesn't really have any business writing an article like this, to call him a hack writer is laughable. He cranks out interesting stat-based analysis articles all the time. Maybe he should just stick to that. Second, anyone that thinks our current group of announcers is any of the following: good, intelligent, professional, or unbiased needs to consult a dictionary. Personally, I blame Drexler for the majority of our crew's downfall as the Worrell/Murphy tandem never struck me as downright unintelligible drivel (which is what Drexler CONSTANTLY spouts) and Bullard has gotten progressively worse since his introduction to the booth. Just because other teams' announcers are equally awful does not make our crew any better. This is truly a league wide problem. STOP HIRING ex-players (especially one's as poorly spoken as Clyde Drexler) and start hiring people who have trained for decades at the craft. The argument that viewers love to hesr ex-coaches and players announce because they give us an insider's perspective to the game is laughable. When is the last time Clyde articulated a salient story from his playing days? Lastly, I agree that broadcasts SERIOUSLY need to start introducing better stats (I'm not even going to call them 'advanced' because so many of them are so grounded in common sense that ANYONE could understand them) so that we can stop breeding dumb, uneducated fans.
Except for the few games that where a national broadcast and the four games I went to this year I have had to download every game. About half of those games where done by the away teams announcers and most of them really suck. I don't mind them being homers I don't have a problem with that since it's their home broadcast. Bill Worrell and Bullard are good at their job and I think the Rockets have one of the top home broadcast in the NBA. They would be a lot better without Drexler I think he sucks and says some of the dumbest things but I usually can overlook him. Hopefully one day they will let Calvin back in the booth and get rid Drexler.
Normally I like Schuhmann's articles but this is garbage (and I would say the same if it was about any other team's commentators). It seems that he has run out of ideas to write about.
Look on the bright side fellow rocketeers! I take it that he had nothing to critique about our team but was probably assigned to critique about the rockets so he chose our weakest link ... ;-)
He's spot on- the TV crew has gotten better, but it still blows. Too homer-ish with poor statements throughout the game.
you're an idiot... they are hired to be homers. That's their freaking job. Wouldn't put them on for a broadcast if they weren't. Who do you think pays them? They aren't there to act as unbiased reporters! Their job is distinctly different than a reporters. And try listening to any other announcers and you'll realize how good ours are about not always slanting it. We have guys who actually give props to other teams and players who do well.
the only one i agreed with (and agree with clyde on) was the 3rd one, the refs can't tell if there's any force, but they have to call hand on the back of any airborne player.
I got a response. The writer said he thinks that comments on "bad calls" is out of hand and it takes away from the game. Honestly it sounds like this is league pr at its finest. David sterns ppl write this crap anyway so how can you honestly expect ethics. The league is firing back through its "reporters."
You know what isn't enjoyable? Watching the nba actively target it's own teams and employees through faux joirnalism
i'm not gonna defend the writing, but i agree with the sentiment. our announcers are sh#t, and they have been sh#t since Calvin left. They're without a doubt the biggest homers in the biz and they are painful to listen to. Often times they're just plain inappropriate. I don't want to hear them go on and on about a missed call. Occasionally, maybe, but it's multiple times a game, EVERY game. Other telecasts don't do that to anywhere near that extent. The writer may be overly harsh, but he's not wrong. I've listened to countless telecasts as i live in DC and can only get the games on League Pass. I have to say, we have the worst commentating crew in the biz. The truth hurts.
Let's be honest, those guys are terrible. But then, majority of the NBA broadcast crews are terrible. I usually just mute the voice.
I don't think you listen to other commentators very often, in fact I know you don't, because of your sentiment against our guys. They do a very good job compared to most places. Go watch a Jazz broadcast, or a Boston one, and tell me our guys were the worst after that.
