The only good thing about Urban Cowboy was Scott Glen. One of the most well done "a-hole" roles that I have ever seen.
Wes was truly a BAD ASS. Loved it when he swallowed that worm. His scowl made Clint Eastwood look like Richard Simmons! Anyone remember a show called The Adventures of Pete and Pete?
Ah, but I found a way to re-lace a pair of Chucky Taylors that got the laces out of the way, thus creating a wonderful little cup for delaying. You laced down through the hole, across, then up through the other side, but don't cross it. Lace it through the next higher hole on the same side so it goes down through that hole, again. Then cross over, and repeat. Down cross up Down on next higher hole same side cross up down on next higher hole same side etc The depressed area behind the toe of the Chucky Taylor, combined with the lace area having laces lying against the top of your foot created an awesome little glove for catching the hacky.
I remember - TMNT was the best cartoon ever. Duck Tales and Rescue Rangers kicked ass. Transformer Toys were rad. Ghost Busters and Back to the Future ruled. The Nintendo Entertainment System was the greatest thing ever invented. Duck Hunt was bomb. and the Zapper made a great pretend weapon as well. Anything remotely scary freaked me out and gave me nightmares for years. That Toy where you build up a bunch of pipes and then watch the marbles run down them to the bottom was sweet.
Oh yeah I forgot about the jheri curl and the mullett . OK who on this BBS board has actually styled their hair like this?
I had a mullet and a jeans jacket full of my favorite bands buttons in HS. That was after I lost my Members Only jacket which I wore with the sleeves rolled up.
I had one of those tiny ponytails that was popular amongst kids in the late 80s (87-88)... of course once my teacher noticed, I was forced to cut it off or be sent home. Being the goody-goody, shy, naive kid I was, I complied... I couldn't imagine being in trouble... egads!
Which one, Greg? If so, that would be Misery. The guys in that band were all people I knew - particularly the drummer, who is an amazing player no matter what the heavy metal he was playing may have implied, and the guitarist. I actually was hired to replace, I think, 3 or 4 tracks on one of their records. They did it in Mickey's studio which is at his house in Pasadena. Gold records all over the walls and Mr. & Mrs. Gilley just hanging out watching TV - really, REALLY nice people. They even had a monkey running around the house and a parrot who hung out in the kitchen and said curse words. What band were you in that you would be playing Backstage, Rock Zone, etc? I played those places too.
I remember Pete and Pete. I don't know if it was the 80's or early 90's (I was born late in '81 so a lot of this stuff is right on the border). All the girls in my elementary school wore hot pink (or other neon colored) leggings with scrunched up socks. We put our ponytails on the side. We also had t-shirts that we tied on the side of our hip. Crimped hair was really cool too. And all we wore were Keds - usually in colors. Lots of jean jackets. There was this big controversy at school that if you played some song backwards (by like NKOTB or Hammer of Vanilla Ice - the only people we listened to - or someone) that it had a different meaning. I wish I could remember what it was. I remember Pogs too. And slap/snap bracelets. What about Pop Rocks and Fun Dip? TMNT, GB and BTTF were also cool! Was anyone else in D.A.R.E. or the Just Say No club? We even had a club at school called the "smoke free class of 2000." We all though it was really cool and stuff.
Yea..it was Greg..we were so envious cause daddy bought him all that rack gear that gave him such a polished sound..and we were makng do with a bunch of crap effects pedals.. We opened for them right before they went on that regional tour in the early 90's..I think they had just cut their first EP out at Mickeys studio.. Whatever happened to them? Agreed about their drummer..he was really good, I always felt that Greg was the weakest member of Misery.. I have never been to Mickey's house, but my mom used to work for the city and knew Mickey..she always said he was a helluva nice guy.. I used to be with Ripper and Axe Thrasher in the mid 80's...and was the sound guy for a band called Paradise..from 87 on.. played Backstage, Millineum, Rock Zone..Cardi's..and few other places that the names elude me at the moment.. I had a feeling we used to move in roughly the same circles during that era..we're pretty close in age and were into the same music styles back then and I've been around musicians since HS..
The drummer is Kevin Coffey. He still plays but in a cover band now with Michael Emerson, a really funny guy and great guitarist who used to work at the Drum Keyboard Guitar Shop. Not sure what Greg is doing. I know that John Jay, the old bassist, is now playing country and Joe Villareal, the guitarist, isn't really playing very much. I played all those places you mentioned in a handful of different bands. The owner of the Rock Zone was a buddy of all the guys I worked with at a music store from 88 - 93.
Kevin Coffey?!?!? That guy taught my high school drumline back in the 80's! Man, there's a name I haven't heard in a long time... BTW, when my folks first moved to H-town back in the 60's, they had an apartment and their next door neighbor was none other than Mickey Gilley. My Dad said that Mickey used to sit out by the pool all day and play his guitar. They used to make fun of him. Guess Mickey got the last laugh.
You must've gone to Klein Oak. I've known Kevin for a long time though I haven't spoken with him in years. If you've never heard him play set, he's unreal. The year after Earl Harvin left North Texas State, Kevin was the stud drummer at all the Texas college competions. Earl of course went on to play with Seal, Roy Hargrove and on an on. Unfortunately, Kevin is now playing covers.
