I think they just want to make this a 7 year deal to spread out the signing bonus over 7 years to lessen the cap hit.

    Getting Henson may be costly

    BY JASON COLE

The agent for QB Drew Henson is seeking an unprecedented contract that would stretch out to 10 or 15 years with guaranteed base salaries each season.

INDIANAPOLIS - If the Dolphins are interested in obtaining Drew Henson, making a deal with the Houston Texans shouldn't be a problem.

Making a deal with Tom Condon, Henson's agent, might be. And the Dolphins began that process Thursday night, when they spoke with Condon.

According to two NFL sources, the Texans have asked teams interested in Henson for either a second-round pick in 2005 or a conditional third-round pick in 2005. The conditional third-round pick could increase to a first-rounder and more depending on what Henson does as a rookie.

Houston general manager Charley Casserly did not want to discuss the parameters of the trade but said he had talked to 10 teams about Henson and ''more than one was interested.'' He also declined to say whether the Dolphins are among those teams.

The Dolphins are expected to be in on the Henson talks, and the asking price could fit into their hopes of not only getting a quarterback for the future, but upgrading the offense. The Dolphins, who don't have a second-round pick, would not have to spend a first- or third-round pick on a quarterback this year if they agreed to a trade with Henson.

From there, however, the plot could get sticky. Or as Buffalo general manager Tom Donahoe said: ``Charley has been really good to work with. Now, we'll see how the agent is to deal with. Charley is not going to be the problem.''

(I suck at selective quoting but there's more on that link. I didn't want to post an entire web page.)

Sportsradio 610 confirmed this morning that Miami is one of the teams that agreed to the parameters. It was not clear to me if other teams had. I want a first rounder.

Forgot to add, the good news is you have Buffalo and Miami, arch rivals, going after the same qb.

    That is the good news.

I think the offer of second round picks is just the minimum requirement so teams can meet with Drew. I think it will eventually go up.

Hell yeah! A 10 to 15 year guaranteed contract in the NFL is ridiculous.

Up until now, only signing bonuses were guaranteed to the player. With guaranteed base salaries each season for 10 to 15 seasons, it looks like Henson wants that money that he gave up to the Yankees back.
I suppose it is a good ploy by his agent, but with incentive clauses being in the millions of dollars for the great players, I would be interested in knowing how much money would be guaranteed in each of those seasons.

it wasn't gutsy at all; it was a 6th round pick. as unlikely as it was at the time that this would all turn out the way it has, it was still more likely than landing a 6th round pick that would actually make the team and even more likely than the 6th round pick actually contributing.

using a 2nd or 3rd pick in hopes of turning it into a 1st or 2nd - now that would have been gutsy.

I think Henson is tryting to get first round pick money. If a trade is worked out, he has to sign with as a 6th round pick, so the money is way less. The only way to get first round money, is to do the type of deal he proposes. Still, I don't know that any team wants to guarantee money like that.

This could be bad news for the Henson trade.

Dolphins to acquire Philadelphia QB Feeley

    By ALEX MARVEZ
    Sun-Sentinel

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Dolphins' search for a new quarterback has ended early in the offseason, as the team is on the verge of finalizing a trade for Philadelphia quarterback A.J. Feeley.

Two NFL sources confirmed Saturday that the Dolphins are set to send an undisclosed draft pick in 2005 for Feeley, a third-year player who showed promise in 2002 while posting a 4-1 record as a starter in place of the injured Donovan McNabb.

Dolphins General Manager Rick Spielman did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Under NFL rules, the trade cannot become official until March 2. But the Dolphins are in the process of negotiating a new contract with Feeley, meeting Saturday morning with agent David Dunn at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

A 2001 fifth-round draft choice from Oregon, Feeley served as Philadelphia's third-string quarterback last season behind McNabb and Koy Detmer. But Feeley showed enough promise during the 2002 season that the Dolphins decided to pursue finalizing a trade rather than waiting for other potential options like Washington's Patrick Ramsey or Drew Henson of the Houston Texans.

The acquisition of Feeley could spell the end of starter Jay Fiedler's four-year tenure with the Dolphins. Fiedler's agent Brian Levy declined to comment on the situation.

I wonder if Feeley can do a Wayne Fontes impression as well as Mitchell?
