Another fine shining moment at the University known better as Nuremberg on the Brazos. I still liked the corp members who pulled their swords on the SMU cheerleaders when those chearleaders were about to go on the field when the Aggie band was still on the field. Link to website with funny Aggie photos including corp leader defending the field against SMU cheerleader
Speaking of legality, are you allowed to put out something racist that was made in a university dorm and uploaded using the university's network both of wich are payed for with tax dollars?
I have only my objective thoughts of when I was there At Best, I was made to feel . . . .tolerated never really included. Racist Stuff happened. . and the Entire Student body was telling me it was an 'isolated' incident. . . how many 'isolated' incidents make a trend . .an issue? we can say . . this is just a few fools KA when they had their issue . .was just a few fools then the next incident will be. . . just a few fools How many fools does it take to make A&M look Foolish? Rocket River
I went to Texas A&M as well and I am a minority (South Asian). Relatively speaking, I don't think A&M is a racist school. However, it is a relatively homogenous school. 95% of your population thinks the same, dresses the same, and acts the same. When that happens, naturally you have hostile feelings towards those who are different. I think Rocket River is right in that a lot of Aggies "tolerate" people that are different. Acceptance and tolerance are two different things. If you want a taste of what I mean, go to www.texags.com and click on the "Religion and Philosophy" section or the "Business and Politics" section. Read how most of those people feel about liberals, gays, Muslims, Mormons, etc. Compare that to what you read here. Texags is notorious for having moderators that are Nazis. Even with that, you can see the types of comments people get away with. The beauty of a BBS is that you can be yourself without fearing social stigma. I like to think that the people on Texags are really what most Aggies are like behind closed doors. I think A&M was really making strides towards being a more accepting and diverse campus. It's too bad that we are losing Dr. Gates. Hopefully the new President continues Dr. Gates' work in this area. Traditions are great, but acceptance and diversity are greater. Just my $0.02
It makes me sad that this is how so many people see my school... I know that A&M has its faults but I love it here. I honestly have never seen the racism first hand, but I also am not friends with that sort of people. The school definately needs to become more appealing to people of all races. I also believe that Gates was making great strides in this area for the university.
I think it's absolutely stupid to even give these people swords. They're not fencing, fighting in a war, or a samurai, and they simply don't need them. One of these days, if they keep "defending" Kyle Field like that (which is I think the stupiest thing I've ever heard), someone's gonna get stabbed with someone. Take them away before it actually happens. With that said, I have many friends who go to TAMU, and I am not bashing on it.
November 10, 2006 MEMORANDUM TO: Students, Faculty and Staff SUBJECT: Update regarding racially offensive video In follow-up to my recent email regarding a racially offensive video, I'm writing to update you on the status of the situation. After receiving complaints Monday morning, the University initiated an investigation of an internet-based video. As you know, the video was racially degrading and was inconsistent with the core values of Texas A&M University. The three individuals who created the video two years ago were later identified as students at Texas A&M and met with University officials. In meetings on Tuesday, the students immediately admitted responsibility for the video and expressed regret. After discussions with University officials, all three students withdrew from the institution by Thursday. Early Tuesday morning, the University requested that the internet host remove the video and it was taken down later that morning. I issued a statement early Tuesday afternoon denouncing the video and its effect (http://diversity.tamu.edu/documents/OpenLetterAggieFamily.pdf). The University sponsored an open forum Tuesday evening to discuss the video and provide an opportunity for the University community to express its concerns. Texas A&M reaffirms its commitment to improving the campus climate for all members of the University community, especially those from under- represented populations. I have charged Dr. Tito Guerrero, Vice President for Diversity, to serve as the point-person for administrative efforts in collaboration with faculty, staff and students to advance diversity education, including implementation of a new University-wide diversity plan developed over the past year. I ask the University community to join us in creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive educational environment. Robert M. Gates President, Texas A&M University
Yup, and they're still students here and were basically kicked out for the semester...it's politics, so I don't know if they're gone for good. I've been resisting to respond to the opinions running around this thread. I still don't know exactly what to say. It doesn't surprise me that there were guys who did this at A&M 2 years ago, but it's hardly an indication of the way campus life has been changing. I've been a student here for 8 years now (o gawd i'm a loser but i'm finally out soon), so if there's any one who is up front and personal with knowing A&M through the recent years, it's me. A&M is no where near perfect, but it is getting better, and it's not any worse than the diversity problems that happen at UT. I stand by this statement. I've traveled the world and back, and am proud of the fact that I'm close friends with people from all walks of life, famous, rich, poor, any race, any religion, any culture, any country, smart, dumb, violent, peaceful, racist...everything...i take people at face value and look for the good them..sometimes it's very hard...but i digress. All I'm saying is everyone's opinion on this matter in this thread is valid, but the A&M now is not the A&M from even 2 years ago. It's trying to maintain the parts of its culture while becoming more diverse...the road is bumpy, but slowly progressing. And back to the UT statement...this is what I mean: how many of you white guys are in relationships with black girls? And vice versa? Now maybe UT is different nowadays, but I spent every summer there from 95-99 and visited friends there often up til 03. Interracial couples up til then still got the stare down according to my interracial couple friends. Now are there any black girl UT students in here? Tell me if I'm wrong: you date a brother from UT, there'll be hundreds of other brothers who know EVERYTHING about you. Not saying there aren't exceptions, but that's the general rule. It's the same thing at A&M. People don't stray from their groups. That's the diversity problem with life. Christians don't hang with nons, athletes don't hang with nerds, conservatives don't hang with liberals...only Filipinos hang with Asians and Latinos...of course I'm speaking in generalizations here. And so A&M is just trying to add more groups to have the same appearance of diversity as UT and every other big campus around the US. So just because there are 5 black people in your class instead of 2 doesn't mean you're truly more diverse, so get off your high horse. I love UT, but racist stuff happens there too (or at least up til 03..and I know this first hand). But that's all it is. Don't lie to yourself. Diversity is an appearance, in general, for there are very few of us out there that don't just stick to people like ourselves. It's human nature to be groupies...it's comfortable. That's why I love sports. There shouldn't be a racial, religious, or cultural slant to bball, though sometimes there is, but in the essence of the game there isn't...it's a beautiful game that brings together all people.
