I SAID: Do you think the sceens in the old videos With the Germans . . or the lynch mobs .. that everyone there was vile and evil . . . or were 'just part of the crowd'? If you think all those that allowed Racism in the 50s are racist then I guess you could conclude that I beleive all of TAMU is racist OR You could think, like I do, that a Majority of the people in the 50s just went along with the crowd I think most of TAMU is pretty ambivalent about Racism on campus because most of TAMU are not the victims of it It is a YP not a MP to them Rocket River "Aggies do not Lie Cheat or Steal . . . or tolerate those who do" I wish we could add BE A Racist/bigot/sexist/etc to that as well
Racism isn't morally outrageous? Bad little boys? These are college students, although maybe immature, who are still old enough to vote, smoke, join the military, etc. We aren't dealing w/ 12 yr olds. Racism isn't a symptom of being immature, this is something they may never 'outgrow' as you might imply.
all that based on color of the skin is RACISM what they did was just that based on color of the skin PLUS slavery and whipping..
What did the Aggie Co-ed say on the night she lost her virginity? "Aw Dad, Yer crushin' mah smokes." Hey how about that Darfur thing huh? Well, at least they aren't making goofy video's.
That is just r****ded ... 99% of the school does not tolerate racism and because a few idiots made a dumb video (and are getting roasted by people on and off campus), you assume the school tolerates it? You are just as bad as the people in the video perpetuating a sterotype of which you know nothing. You say you are an Aggie, but based on your comments, I don't believe you went to A&M in the last 15 years, and if you did, you didn't do it objectively.
I never ran into a racist "staff" member or prof, but there are definately racist students. The ones I could tell were racist tended to come from small podunk towns where highschool fights were fueled by old family fueds becuase most of them came from the same 2 families. That's an exageration, but you get the gist.
I don't think so, thoguh I would never think about going there. The student body just isn't very diverse and there's a reason for that. My friend, who happened to be white, said going there was the biggest mistake he ever made. He said everyone looked, dressed, and thought the same. I don't think people that goto atm are racists, but I'm sure it would be more accepted there. UT on the other hand is basically the opposite of atm. No group think and everyone has a big mouth. Very diverse campus, especially considering we're in Texas.
Yeah so I seem to remember some UT students holding a party where they dressed up like minorities and walked around "acting" like people of the other races (as also happened at other universities including A&M), so I guess that means everyone at UT is just part of the herd and accepts racisim The reason I say that he is not looking at it objectively is because 99% of that school is not racist and does not tolerate it. People from A&M are probably more upset about this than anyone else because all it does is make all of us look bad so to say that we just accept it is r****ded. How is A&M ever going to become more diverse when all high school students hear is ignorant things like racism is tolertated there when it is not? Every single person has been discriminated against at some point in your life whether it is race, religion, sex, height, weight, or whatever. To me, blaming the actions of a few on everyone else does a huge injustice.
Should there be punishment? I mean, generally speaking, the "marketplace of ideas" tends to work well in our society. We don't generally punish people for having idiotic thoughts, and we especially should think twice about doing so on a college campus. If we start putting in speech codes (which I know exist on many college campuses), we run the very serious risk of stifling legitimate debate. This video sounds like it wasn't legitimate debate. It sounds like it was horrible and disgusting and terrible, but it still shouldn't be punishable, in my opinion. The solution to "bad" speech is "good" speech, not no speech. The president's message is a step in that direction.
But on the other hand, maybe we should punish Josh for continually using the term "r****ded" to mean "stupid", something many people find offensive.
You look at the entire student body and not just a few idiots. And I am certainly not condoning what these idiots did, I am just tired of a few idiots doing something stupid, and then having it reflect bad on the entire school because the school is not like that. I want to make Texas A&M as welcoming a place for all races, genders, and everyone else, and I just believe that blaming things like this on the entire student body just sets the entire school back and keeps it from moving in a positive direction. The sooner A&M can improve its diversity the better off the school and our state will be.
Fair Enough ... I'll agree that this is a word that I use as slang without thinking and it could be offensive to some and shouldn't be used.
And on a side note, there are something like 1300-1400 African American students at Texas A&M (3.0% of the school population), while the University of Texas has roughly 3.7% of its population comprised of African Americans. http://www.tamu.edu/oisp/reports/ep/epfa2006.pdf http://www.utexas.edu/academic/oir/statistical_handbook/05-06/pdf/0506students.pdf Both schools are trying very hard to improve those numbers. UT has done a lot better job in being more diverse in having a larger hispanic population.
I'm at a loss for words...In this day and age crap like this, but unfortunately, there is a lot of ignorance...
Reading these posts I'm even more amazed at the hate directed at the great school that I attended years ago based on some YouTube video. The hatred flows in 2 directions. I grew up in Austin, attended A&M from 1992-96, am a minority myself, and never felt that racism was any more rampant there than anywhere else I've been. Every organization/institution has their share of knuckleheads. Try not to be subjected to racist hate by generalizing an entire student body based on the actions of a few. I'm grateful to have received an education at A&M and the opportunities after it. Go Rockets!
