'Wierd' I think is a bit strong. As mentioned, it's normal in many parts of the world, esp. where families have a 1 room shack. I think the only concern should be how it impacts the child, such as potential embarassment or if it effects independence in any way.
I think it is pretty strange as well. My kids have never even slept in the same room as me much less slept with me. My kids have only slept with me once and that was after my ex wife ran off with everything I had (including my kids) to Chicago and I was able to have them for one weekend over Easter. I only had one bed so they slept with me. By the time the courts made her move back, 9 months later, they had their own bed.
i have a 2 year old nephew that still sleeps in the same bed with my sister, only b/c there's not an extra room. i've always wondered how that would affect his independence. i realize he's still only 2 but i figured you gotta start them out on their own early.
