Hey DonkeyM, it worked for Green Bay... And they were Super Bowl contenders when they got Rodgers... True, Favre was on his way out, but they didnt ignore the possibility that an new era was approaching.... If we dont make the playoffs this year or next, we undoubtedly are gonna change things , starting with the QB position... So why not grab a good one now to groom , rather than later, when the **** hits the fan!!!
Um...because the Texans could use help at other positions. If I remember correctly, GB had a few extra picks that year traded up for him. Yes, if a QB like him is sitting there for the taking, sure you do it. Granted under the remote possibility the Texans don't make the playoffs, heads will roll. I doubt it is Schaub's though.
This is why the Suck for Luck Colt possibility is so fascinating - will they draft him and ignore what are obvious other holes, or set Manning up for a strong 2-4-year career-ending run with a huge, Hershel Walker-like trade? The Texans need to continue to upgrade and replenish. This team still has holes to fill and QB isn't the only position that might need a make-over in the coming years.
Rodgers was a subject on the big show this morning. Lance told a story about how he commented to Casserly that Rodgers was the best college qb coming out during the 05 draft and CC responded by saying he personally didn't watch much college football.
You're ignoring the biggest weaknesses: CB2 and Nose Tackle. That being said, on the QB in the 2nd round. Is it too much to hope? Will he drop to the end of the second round if Baylor loses a lot of games?
If heads roll, it has to be Schaub... You see it all the time , when there's a coaching change... If Cowher is hired(lord please), IMO Schaub probably wouldnt be high on his wish list.. Cowher will probably play with him that 1st year to see if Schaub is "his guy".. My guess would be no... Those other positions can be addressed via FA or trade... We have some decent players on our team , that can can be used to accumulate more draft picks... You say a "QB like him" referring to Rodgers... Well he wasnt the future HOF QB we know now... Teams passed him for reasons that seem stupid now.. If RGIII or some other hotshot QB is there for the taking , in round 2... I grab him and groom him for 2/3 years... Of course this is all hypothetics, because we obviously wouldnt have made the playoffs for this to play out.... My ultimate point is .... We dont have to rebuild and suck for x number of years in the future, if we start now .... Teams like NE and Pitt rebuild while succeeding...
Yes, "if heads roll", you might take a QB gamble and reevaluate things. Problem is, that's extremely unlikely to happen, and you should know that. Unless the Titans somehow win the AFC South, Kubiak's guaranteed to be back in 2012 and will probably receive an extension.
1) you're assuming there is going to be an another Aaron Rodgers in this draft. 2) GB was 10-6 but they were on the decline and it was obvious...hardly superbowl contenders. 3) as you mentioned favre was on his was out at 36 years old. Schaub being 30 is completely different. He's in his prime as a QB. 4) if there are no playoffs this year, there will be changes but it won't start at the QB position. I'd bet dollars to donuts that it won't be QB at all. although RG3 would be ok with me.
Matt Schaub is 30. His contract ends next year, and is likely to be extended for 4-6 years if we do what I think we're going to do this year. We don't need to take a QB just yet. Maybe in 2014 or 2015.
The bigger question is: Are the Texans to the point that they no longer have to draft for need, and can draft best player available? It's starting to seem that way. There are positions (OLB, RB) that aren't as deep or as strong as others (DT, CB), but the Texans have at least one legit NFL starter at virtually every position, for the first time in franchise history. If that's so, how does that change draft strategy? Do you try to trade down and get more picks, and build depth, the way the Patriots do?
It just depends on what their draft board looks like. If they think they can trade out and still get who they want, al la the Ben Tate trade when they passed on Gerhart...jeez, remember people complaining about that pick?\ But you're right, it will be a first where they can really choose whoever they want without too much pressure on filling a particular need
Has the size and fundamentals -- as long as he gets a good 3 years or so to learn I don't see why not. I also get the feeling that Matt Leinart doesn't suck nearly as much as people think he does.
i'm cautiously optimistic about Yates, but you're right. He needs a couple/3 years. I'm on the fence about matt. He still seemed to be Captain checkdown in the preseason
Unfortunately, every QB drafted in mid rounds are tagged to be QB's of the future... If he turns out as a starting caliber QB , then great... But if not , then it was a risk/reward pick... I dont have a problem with waiting till we need to draft one... But more often times than not, it would signify a rebuilding period... Im just saying if theres a RGIII-calibur QB sitting there in the early rounds, why not take him... Instead of getting a CB thats gonna have to wait 2/3 years to be productive... Since Kubiak obviously thinks KJ will get it together just in time for Houston hosting the Super Bowl, I think it wouldnt hurt to grab potential franchise player in the early rounds... We're pretty loaded with talent everywhere thats essential... We can address the DT and CB positions through FA....
assuming no money is there after Arian and Mario, I think WR is the surest safe bet in the 1st round...
