In that case, doesn't it seem like a fair deal to you? The fans (whom the league contend this whole event is for in the first place) get to pick the starters, but in order not to make it a total joke, the 'experts' in the league get to pick the most deserving players left out by the fans as reserves.

    Fair enough, IMO.

Yao will never win, there will always be some "yellow peril" conspiracy no matter how the results turn out if they elect him the starting center in the ASG. All Star votes are popularity contests so the critics should just deal with it. If the critics want to take the vote away from the people, let them talk to Stern about changing the system to one like the Heisman voting where the sports writers vote for the players.

Yao is so popular that basketball fans all over the world love him. You can do nothing about it. If you do want to blame sb., blame NBA, blame Stern, because voting is open to everyone in the world, not just American. And even American people love him. His impact is on and off the court

    Are you just kidding me?

Back-ups are selected by coaches in NBA.

yao is clearly the best center in the western conference so i don't even see what all the fuss is about. he deserves to start.

And I'm tired of the "He's 7'6", he should be dominating the league." If they're going to use that argument, then they have to compare him to those within 1-3 inches of his height. If they don't, then they need to shut up about the 7'6" factor.

    CAREER STATISTICS

Name- Points, Rebounds, Field Goal %,Free Throw %

    Manute Bol (7'7")- 5.5, 4.2, 42%, 56%
    Mark Eaton (7'4")- 6.0, 11.0, 45%, 64%
    Shawn Bradley (7'6")- 8.1, 6.3, 45%, 71%
    Gheorge Muresan (7'7")- 9.8, 6.4, 57%, 64%
    Rik Smits (7'4")- 14.8, 6.1, 50%, 77%
    Ralph Sampson (7'4")- 15.4, 8.8, 48%, 66%

    Yao Ming (7'6")- 16.6, 8.5, 52%, 80%

And Yao Ming's numbers have gone up every year in almost every category.

In Sampson's defense...I think he could have been Kareem-esque if it weren't for his chronic knee problems.

Leading vote getter in the entire effing league and he gets zero respect from the refs. Unbelievable. If Stern weren't so stupid, it'd be hard to believe.

Totally agree. Comparing Yao with a young Ralph Sampson is certainly a compliment. And, to be truthful, comparing Yao to Smits is really not that bad, either- although Yao is definitely better. Rik was a good player and a key reason why Indiana went to the Finals in 2000.

Differance between MLB and NBA is that in the MLB the all star game matters a lot. It decides home field advantage in the World Series. That is real big, might have changed the faith of teh Astros loss. Thats why reserves are picked, cause it is more of a serious game where teams want talent rather than popularity. NBA ASG is simply for money and fun.

I do not care whether he is likeable or not, or whatever. Unless Shaq is still in the West, Yao is the top center if not the best this season. There is no problem whatsoever for fans to vote him in. It is not like that fans vote Kandi man as the starting center. Yao deserves it as much as Camby deserves it. If Camby is voted as the starter, no problem at all.

Anyway, I think both Camby and Yao will play in the AS game

There might be a lot of Chinese fans votes for Yao and votes T-Mac in also, I remember years back Francis gets the vote to start for West guard also.

I also am tired of hearing that Yao was starting because there's so many billions of chinese people. I bet there's also a lot of US fans like me that keep stuffing the ballots for both TMac & Yao day after day.

I feel very under-appreciated because us U.S. voters don't get the credit we deserved. :D

SF got in the ASG before Yao was drafted. You cannot put that on Chinese fans.
