Why must black people have to justify being offended?

Why can you wife/brother/cousin/etc call you something
    that no one else can?

    Familiarity? Commonality? Linked heritage?
    All of the above

as someone that has never felt the pains and struggles of black people
you have no right to use the word .. . once you go through it .. then you can be included. . . . until they . . .stay on the other side of the line

Dude. Zip it! Nobody is casting fault. I'm simply explaining why if YOU call somebody a ***** why you'll get popped in the mouth.

You don't need to bend over backwards. Just don't call me a ***** and I'll be happy.

Likewise. I get tired of hearing ignorant responses like yours. Maybe one day we can meet in the middle. Clearly, that day won't be today ...thanks to YOU.

who cares? RARELY is life black and white issues (no pun). Life is full of shades of grey. You'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure it all out.

If you can't understand it, just accept the fact that you can't use the word and be done with it.

Everytime I see a commercial jet flying through the air, it doesn't seem to make sense but they continue to fly. Everytime you see black people call each other ***** it may not make sense but they'll continue to use the word.

when i was around 8 or 9 yo, i was watching a basketball game at my grandparent's house during christmas vacation. my great grandfather was sitting in the chair next to me and i asked him if he liked basketball. he said: "no son, i don't enjoy watching colored boys running around in their underwear." this is my first remembrance of the concept of racism. i don't use the word in question in this thread in any variation, but i do believe that what is in your heart is for more relevant than any word you could use. am i racist? the answer is that i have no idea.

I agree that racism still lives. I know that because I'm an Asian that grew up near Acres Homes. I experienced most of my racism from the blacks in the community. But I also have a lot of good friends from that same community and they can call me chink or whatever and I don't care a bit. It's all about intent to me.
I've met some of the most racist black people who then turn around and claim victimization and demand affirmative action from the white community. But those people are just fools. Why should I use them as an example of the rest of the group?
Same reason I don't think all Arabs are terrorists.

Again, a white person CAN call a black person a *****.

It's all about perception of intent.

A person can call another person anything they want, but they'd be insane not to consider the potential repercussions (or even concussions). I know I'd be tearing the room down if someone offended me that way to my face.

The thing that strikes me about these type of debates is that some people get offended that others take offense over words. For example with the "Chinaman" threads the argument always seems to be well the history isn't as widely know so Asian Americans shouldn't be offended when someone use that term and even knowing the history that its been so long since Chinese built the railroads that people should be allowed to use the term. In the case of this thread it seems to be, well black people routinely use "n^gger" or some variation so why should they be offended when others use it.

As I said before it is up to the group that is being addressed to decide what they find offensive. While this might not seem to make sense to those not in the group its not up to another group to decide what offends one group. While I'm against censorship of language in the interest of a civil plural societal I would hope that people voluntarily refrain from offending others even if they don't fully understand why that is. Intent is important its true but ignorance shouldn't be an excuse and if someone feels they are ignorant of why someone is offended that still shouldn't exclude respecting that person enough to avoid offense.

Of course and a black person can punch that white person. Just because someone CAN do something doesn't mean they SHOULD.

The effects of the slavery are still felt today. Partly to the distribution of wealth but I believe mostly because of the destruction of their culture. Once the slaves were free they didn't have many rights and not full rights under the law until 1965 and then even realistically until much later, once African-Americans started holding public office. The destruction of their culture left a huge gap in their psyche. So an African-American culture was created in the worst of economic conditions which has led to a feeling of disenfranchisement which makes it hard to believe that upward mobilization is possible. This coupled with the real racism that still exists have created a portion of Americans who don’t feel like they are a part of the American Dream.

Just my 2 cents, but then, what the hell do I know.

he never said anything about black people having to justify why they get offended. he was just asking why ***** is viewed as something not bad when said by one black guy to another black guy. he didn't understand so he was trying to find out. i don't think there are any other ethnic groups in america that use corruptions of ethnic slurs as common references to one another. maybe you can use some women who call each other b****es, but even with b**** there is the connotation that you are being independent and able to stand up without a man. with ****** there is no positive meaning, except for just identifying with a whole group of people that you suffer with which i guess can be viewed as a positive thing.

i am just writing and thinking at the same time to see if this helps our thread starter out.
