    rac·ism (rszm) Pronunciation Key
    n.
The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability.

    If you notice = racist
(now given, the general term implies hatred etc...I'm just trying to take it to the next level)

And some blacks are offended by the term "African American" , Why arent whites called "European American".....If you're going to do something do it across the board...Why even have race on drivers licenses, job apps, etc etc..

I went to church last Sunday
So I could sing and pray
    But something quite unusual
    Happened on that day

Now church it started right on time
Just like it does without a doubt
And everything was all just fine
Except when it came time to let us out

You know the preacher he kept preaching
He told us I have one more thing to say
Children before you think of leaving
You better think about the Judgment Day

    Now everyone got nervous
    Because everyone was hungry too
    And everyone was wondering
What was the next thing he would do

And the preacher he kept preaching
He said now I'll remind you if I may
    You all better pay attention
Or I might decide to preach all day

And now everyone was getting so hungry
That the old ones started feeling ill
And the weak ones started passing out
And the young ones they could not sit still

And the preacher's voice rose higher
So I snuck up on the balcony
And I crept into the choir
And I begged them brothers, sisters, help me please

I said when I give you a signal
I said when I raise up my hand
Won't you please join with me together
And praise the Lord I have a plan

And the preacher he kept preaching
Long is the struggle, hard the fight
And I prayed, Father please forgive me
And then I stood up and with all my might
    I sang

To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
And I listened to what the preacher said
Now it's to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat

Yes and I did give a signal
Yes and I raised up my hands
And then joined with me the choir
Yes every woman, child, and man
    They sang

To the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
And I've listened to what the preacher said
Now it's to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat

And the preacher he stopped preaching
And a hush the church did fill
And then a great white dove from up above
    Landed on the window sill

And the dove flew down beside him
And a fork appeared right in his hand
    And with everybody watching
The preacher ate that bird right there and then

And now everyone got really nervous
And the preacher he did start to glow
And as we watched in disbelief
These were the words he spoke

He said now Mama's in the kitchen
And she's been there all day
And I know she's cooking something good
So let's bow our heads and pray
    And he sang

To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
Now listen to what the preacher said
He said to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat

And the moral of this story
Children it is plain but true
God knows if a preacher preaches long enough
    Even he'll get hungry too
    And he'll sing

To the Lord let praises be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat
We've got some beans and some good cornbread
Now listen to what the preacher said
He said to the Lord let praised be
It's time for dinner now let's go eat

I did not watch the clip
    but
Dave's reason for leaving the show was a concern that people
would use it to justify racist beleifs or various other things

Not saying you or the poster who posted it are trying to do that
    but
Just wanted to add that to the debate

Did I miss something or are you saying that the use of the word "Indian" is an offensive term?

I have not met anybody that was offended at being called African American. That said, blacks rarely refer to themselves as such. At this point, you mainly hear the word on the news or with white people that don't have much contact with blacks and are trying to be politically correct. White people that regularly mingle with other blacks usually don't use the term African American either since blacks don't refer to themselves as such.

All that said, whites are often referrenced to their home country. Irish-American, Italian-Amarican, etc are common. With regards to blacks, the exact origin is unknown hence the reference to the continent rather than the specific country.

I know many African American people that are very offended by the N word (either of them) regardless of who says it or how it is used so those of you that make blanket statements saying that it is ok for certain people to do it are doing a huge injustice if you ask me.

I am surprised this thread is still pushing.

Anyhow, has anyone seen that biopic X about Malcolm X by Spike Lee? There was a segment in there where X was learning about the negative connotations of the word "black". I think those connotations were the root of the movement in the 80s for black people wanting to be called "African Americans".

One thing I have never understood was this: Does everybody remember when Jennifer Lopez used the word in her hit single "I'm Real (Remix) " and a big hoopla was caused over her use of the word although she was not black? OK, why has nobody made the same ruckus over artists such as Fat Joe (Example) and Big Punisher (Example) using the same word when they aren't black themselves and are the same race as Jennifer Lopez?

Again, this goes back to "how you use it." Most younger folks use ***** freely while the older generation does not. Most blacks know this and wouldn't use the term with their elders ...just like much of your language changes when around elders.

Here is my blanket statement: Don't use it unless you know how. If you do, go ahead.

well if there were more terms i would use them. it's like the difference between latino and chicano, except it is obviously much more pronounced since american blacks don't really have ties to their countries of origin like african immigrants do.

and i should have been using american blacks like i normally do. i generally don't like the african american term for the american black ethnicity. even though blacks come from africa they certainly are not african. it's like calling me a scottish american. sure i know my ancestry is from the highlands of scotland, but B.F.D. ..it's not like I am scottish.

also, i have never heard of a black person say they were offended by african american.

finally, if you are going to try to define something at least paste the whole thing.

My friend, you need to look up the definition of racism. That is not racist.

Offensive to you, but not necessarily to someone else.

You are showing your age. You characterize it as a 'problem.'

Keep in mind, language is NEVER in a static state ...it is constantly evolving. The language that the younger generation is using now will be standard soon enough.

Just because YOU have a problem with it doesn't make it a problem.

Once again, it is HOW you use the word.

The word is essentially a cuss word. I hear people say cuss words all the time and I'm not offended but I wouldn't use cuss words around my parents.

So you're denying Fuzzy's comments were racist? That's laughable.
