I completely agree with the Princess Bride thing. Inigo Montoya should have been top 30 at least. By the way, I don't really think Luke should be #1 hero, but at least to 10. Unless they don't like characters that kiss their sister.
To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book and I am one of the chosen few who have seen the movie. I even have a dog named Scout. I am not over 50 (yet), but Fatty FatBastard has me in the Geritol set. Superb choice! ****************** "They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions," said Atticus, "but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience." – Atticus Finch
Another one I was wondering about is why the guys from Pulp Fiction weren't on the Villians list. I'd put Jules and Vincent up there . . .
I think young skywalker was too busy complaining to Uncle Owen about the power converters... I also think Verbal (Kevin Spacey) should be a lot higher..
I remember being 9 and my Dad sat us down and "forced" us to rent To Kill A Mockingbird. Amazing movie, amazing book. Good pick for #1. If you havent seen this movie you are missing something.
The way I take thiis Top 100 list is that it's based on a single movie. (Notice Han and Obi Wan are given credit for Star Wars, while Darth gets it for Empire) Which single movie was Luke a Top 50 hero in? The closest might be Jedi, but he really wasn't that awesome of a hero even in that movie. He might be a hero for all 3 movies combined, but on a single movie basis, he isn't...at least according to AFI.
he's a classic epic hero. i wrote a paper in high school ( a LONG time ago) comparing Beowulf, MLK, and Luke Skywalker as epic heroes. All exhibited the characteristics of traditional epic heroes. Luke in Jedi is VERY much the hero. I'd put him ahead of Obi-Wan everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Ultimately "rescuing" his own father....destroying the emperor/empire....the ONLY jedi left....resisting his own temptations toward hatred/dark side....his final scenes fighting Vader and interacting with the emperor are great. his character grew more in that one scene than obi-wan's did in all of the movies combined! compare that to Ellen Ripley, who was a hero to survive?? or erin brokovich?? or Tarzan?? all those made the list...and Luke didn't. that's just silly. *EDIT* -- this is easily the nerdiest post I've ever made here.
That Erin Brockovich pick really pisses me off... I have no problem with Ripley though...one of the best female action movie heros of our time...
Gee, Luke only saved the entire galaxy from being ruled by the Republic in Star Wars, blew up an AT-AT Walker on Hoth in Empire, and saved Han Solo's dumb ass from Hutt's layer in Jedi...Yeah, I'd like to see Han Solo jump off a diving board, grab onto it, spring back up, do a somersalt, then land back on the diving board... Man, the things some guys have to do to get a little recognition....
I wasn't as riled about the omission of Luke as some people, but I can see more of a case for him now. But you have to take the trilogy as a whole. I was interested to see Michael Corleone on the Villains list for Godfather 2. I was thinking where Michael Corleone from the original Godfather should be. He's both hero and villain, depending on how you look at it. That's part of what makes the movie so great. His character should definitely be on a list of great characters. One villain I've always liked is Kevin Spacey's character from Seven. I think that movie made me a fan of Kevin Spacey.
Relativist: Contrary to what has been posted, anyone who watched the show knows that the Heroes/Villains were rated for their entire work. Like Dracula: They showed clips from 1920-1990. With Batman: they showed every Batman Movie. With Bond: they showed every Bond actor (all 5-6 of em) With Indy Jones: they showed the entire trilogy. This was about entire ensembles. (Which is why Luke is wrong.) And I guess I'll have to see "To Kill A Mockingbird" But I seriously doubt he beats out my greatest hero's. (And William Wallace is, and will always be in my top three, if not #1. A HUGE absence in the top 100.)
To Kill A Mockingbird is a great, great, great movie. If you haven't seen it, go rent it today. Not only is there the great performance by Gregory Peck, but the movie was Robert Duvall's screen debut as well (see if you can find him). Fantastic movie...
