Let's be honest with ourselves: Joe Montana was the greatest quarterback of the modern era. John Elway was not as consistently dominant from the start, like Montana was. Anybody who actually watched most of Montana's and Elway's respective careers will confirm this.

I think the way Elway managed games paved the way for Peyton Manning and what he does these days.

The no-huddle, the 2 minute drill. Elway could have been having a 4 interception day and he'd somehow pull out a win.

    God I hated that SOB.

    "Coach, talk to us about..."

    "And talk to us about..."

    "Talk to us about..."

"Good luck in the second half."
    ----
"That was a great... wasn't it? Talk to us about.."

"And what about...? Talk to us about..."

"Coach, I know... talk to us about..."

I f#(*&@#)&'ng hate Steve Tasker as a sideline interview guy... OR as a color commentator... does he ever ask a question any other way? Gosh, he sucks. Please, CBS. Please. Don't put him on the Super Bowl sidelines...

    Steve Tasker is so unnecessary.

Gus Johnson brings enough excitement to a game all by himself.

I agree with you but I can respect someone else feeling differently. In the playoffs, Montana was both incredibly clutch AND he was a machine who would grind weaker teams into powder. Peyton Manning is the only QB I've seen worthy on knocking Montana off the top pedestal. If he wins the Super Bowl this year, it's a done deal.

Payton would still be 2 Super Bowls and 1 Super Bowl MVP behind Montana.

That's assuming that the Colts win the Super Bowl this year and Manning wins the S.B. MVP.

I think Montana would still edge him out for best ever.

Unitas was the man who invented the 2 minute drill. Elway wwas just one of his disciples.

This is the Sporting News's (TSN) list of the greatest NFL players ever (it was done in 1999). If there are any players today I see cracking this list, and getting towards the top 10. It would be Peyton Manning and Brett Favre (move from #82) with Tom Brady trailing. Mainly, because of the MVPs.

It's hard to believe how Jerry Rice was still performing at a high level well in 2000s. He's certainly the greatest WR ever. 22 tds in 12 games for receiver is even to this day, unimaginable.

It's a great list, though I think a few players could be higher or lower.

If Unitas invented it, Elway perfeced it. Plus Johnny had Raymond Berry, the Jerry Rice of his era, as well as the NFL's best Defense backing him up.

Karma will strike in April when Carson Palmer gets stranded on the freeway with a flat tire.

One of the things I really liked about him was how he would use his hardcount to try to draw people offsides, and if it worked, he was throwing a long bomb down the field since it was a free play anyway.

You don't really see that much anymore.

Also, Manning has played in an era where the rules have been tilted toward protecting the quarterback and outlawing physical play against wide receivers.

If you're going that route, then you might as well discredit all offensive stats posted since 1977 when the NFL implemented the "5 yard contact" rule on defenses.

On the flipside, prior to 1994 there was no NFL salary cap, so you had more potential for baseball-like disparity between teams instead of the parity-based NFL of today.
