[Advice] How do I know if I like the Beatles or not

So you hate the Beatles

 

Never heard of them. Looks like a bunch of hippies.

First heard of them at about 8 years old in 1979, when my neighbors parents put on the album, I asked who were they, but I didn't pay much attention as I was distracted by 8 year old stuff. I do recall the moment though.

First was introduced to the music in high school, around 16 years old, where my english teacher forced us to watch a documentary on them Beatles which pretty much hit on every song and showed them coming to New York. I liked almost every song and became an immediate fan, thinking, hey damn, these guys are really good.

Learned last year that they first came to Washington DC, then to New York.

I recall thinking what a waste of money for Michael Jackson to buy their catalog of 250 songs for 50 million, because how would he make any money off it, especially with the ability to share music and then eventually steal songs, and then itunes and other copyright opportunities showed up 20 years later, and I was totally wrong not to realize the value of copyright even in a world that can bypass it. The catalog makes 80 million each year, and is essentially priceless. I think it's interesting that the Beatles did not buy their own songs back at the time, but honestly, if you write them, it would be like buying your own art back, so I get why they wouldn't purchase them.

 

Neighborhood garage sale today and no one is buying any of my crap. I need advice as to what I'm doing wrong, CF.

 

We're on the same page. On weekends I always put some bourbon in my coffee.

And I've made $13 so far.

Does anyone want an oak table with 3 chairs and an exercise bike?

 

I feel like the Beatles wrote some great songs that other artists recorded much better years later.

Disagree. There have been some nice covers. But the Beatles were terrific musicians and performers in addition to being great song writers. Just my opinion.

 

The real question is:

Beatles, Who or Stones?

The Beatles are the greatest band that ever walked this Earth. There's no dispute, no question, no equivocation; and it's not even close.

Overplayed? sure maybe. They broke up in 1969, they didn't make any music as a band since so that's a lot of years for the catalog and they are the still one of the most played bands, so sure we know every note of every song.

But in the short span they recorded with Sir George Martin, they were the most creative, prolific and varied band ever. They went from the simplest three chord love songs to some of the most complex rock compositions. And they never put out a dog album producing 3 or 4 albums a year.

You might want to be a contrarian, or hate your parents or just want to be edgy and cool, but if you don't at least secretly love the Beatles you have no musical taste to speak of.
