Read my first post: I enlisted after 9/11. During basic training I got hurt, they found spinal arthritis, and they sent me home. Edit: and on top of that, I'm trying to get back in (on waivers) after nursing school. Hopefully they'll take me as I'd then be an officer in a non-combat specialty. And as for the OP's daughter, she wouldn't be in combat arms. In the Navy or Air Force, she'd be even more safe. Try again.
There is no use arguing the merits and rewards of the military with someone with the moniker "T-Slack". My military experience was awesome. It took me from college burnout wasting time and money with no motivation, to an Engineer with degree(Government paid for!) who has seen the world and carved out his own niche in life. I am now working on my Master's Degree which will also be paid for by Uncle Sam. Sure I had to endure being called into battle, but it was my choice to sign up, and due to the confidence the mililitary afforded me, when the time came I welcomed the challenge. I never understand the people who have never served, yet are the first to criticize the President for using his right to deploy troops as he sees fit. I guess it is easier to just take Michael Moores word for how military life really is. I think those who are critical would be really surprised at how, in the end, the military does much more good for our children than bad.
I say kick her out. Don't forget if she sinks, you can always jump in and pull her back out. And I would advise her of the Military. As long as she is in the military she won't have to worry about recessions(assuming the country doesn't collapse), she won't have to worry about where her next meal will come from, and she'll always have a place to sleep. When my Mother-in-Law kicked out my brother-in-law, that was my advice, though he hasn't gone that route and is back in the house, though he at least has a job now.
I would give you negative rep if I could. The vast majority of military men and women are never killed or raped. Most actually go on to have great lives. The military takes care of their own.
True, but I wouldn't send my kid to military when there's a war going on. Sorry.. I'd prefer other alternatives, but that's just me.
you do understand that joining the military doesnt mean you will be on the front lines...right? There are plenty of opportunities where you will be quite safe.
If she joined the AF, she has almost 0 chance of going to war. The only reason I recommend Army is that it is the easiest and quickest way in because of demand, but your chances of being deployed to a combat zone is much more likely. She could also look into those jobs designed to replace military members that are deployed.
Just in case the OP is unfamiliar, you do get to choose, but your choice is circumscribed by the military, based largely on a recruit's performance on the ASVAB. If she was a poor student, she may not score high enough on the test to do the more interesting jobs.
And to the OP, if she does not score high enough to get one of the more interesting jobs, she can just not join. There is no harm in having her talk to a recruiter and taking the ASVAB. You may be pleasantly surprised at the doors that open up!
True. True. And true. Safety is highest in the Air Force, then Navy, then Army and Marines. The Army and Navy are the largest, have the most money to offer re: sign on bonuses and other perks (such as choosing your duty station and MOS, which are dependent on ASVAB scores as Juan mentioned above), and have the most and fastest opportunities for promotion, which = more money, responsibility, and respect. Curious as to Nero's response and whether he or she would even consider any of this as an option....
