I guess there aren't any settings on the Toshiba 37HL67 that you recommended to me, tinman. I searched that avsforums.com site and I couldn't find anything. I'll just play with it when I get it set up.

here's the link to your tv's thread
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=835924&page=12

keep in mind you really don't need the 37 part, that just indicates the size.
so 42HL67 is just the 42 inch version of your tv.
so any setting for the HL67 would work for all sizes of that series of TV.

there are lots of settings in that thread, here are some you should try:
    Contrast 62
    backlight 64
    dynalight on
    brightness 63
    color 58
    tint +7
    sharpness 60
    dynamic contrast high
    static gamma +4
    noise reduction both on high.
    Color temp: medium (Normal)

    ----
    Color temp...mid
    Noise and MPEG...off
    Contrast ...70
    Backlt... 30
    Color..45
    Tint...0
    Brightness...55
    Auto contrast..low
    Gamma...default
    AR...native

    Blue gain..-5
    Green...-3
    -------
    Contrast 68
    Backlight 65
    Dynalight ON
    Brightness 53
    Color 35
    Tint 0
    Sharpness 40
    Dynamic Contract LOW
    Static Gamma +2
    Color Temp Medium
    B Drive +6
    G Drive +4
    DNR Medium
    MPEG Noise Reduction LOW

just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
don't be afraid to buy a private label brand tv as opposed to a brand name tv. most likely, they can come from the same location because of outsourced electronic manufacturing. i actually was able to visit a plant in beijing that produced the plasma and lcd screens for companies like samsung. but the company also had its own brand called envision. the stuff all comes from the same factories.

    looks like a good deal.
the toshiba hd dvd players are superior dvd players too. they use the one of the best video processors for standard dvds. most bluray or upscale dvd players usually cheap out on the standard dvd processing.

    http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_14_4/toshiba-hdxa2-dvd-player-10-2007-part-2.html
" Another huge benefit of the Reon processor is its performance with standard definition DVD discs. The Reon is one of the most advanced video processing chips available, and it does a tremendous job of de-interlacing and scaling standard DVDs. I had the chance to put the XA2 through our DVD Benchmark™ tests, and it did extremely well, rating one of our highest scores to date. In fact, the only downside of this player in our Benchmark was its transport and decoder limitations. Without a doubt, this is the best HD playback device I've seen, for watching standard DVDs, and it can deliver image quality better than many DVD players costing thousands of dollars more."
