Probably less than 4 pounds. Her female is much bigger (around 10 or so). I'm sure it's a rare thing I'm sure. She lived on the golf course in a community that was very wooded (deer, some coyotes, foxes, tons of rabbits) but it happens. A co-worker told me a story (I assume she was telling the truth) about her parents' Chihuahua getting snatched up by a hawk and eaten in the top of a tree a few hundred yards away. She said they could her the dog screaming while the bird ripped it up. Pretty sad if true.
That's crazy... my grandparents live in a very wooded area with owls and hawks all around and their dog has never been threatened by them. The older one is around 8 pounds now (obese dog!). The first dog I plan to get is a Shiba Inu, I think it fits most of her criteria: They're supposed to be a highly intelligent dog that can be independent and usually aren't born with most of the genetic disorders a lot of bred dogs suffer from.
a friend of mine brings his miniature dachsund out golfing with us. hawks have followed us a few holes a few times. Once a hawk swooped down on while she was on the other side of the green but it pulled up and took off at the last second. a few holes later we saw the hawk get a squirrel. I heard the poke/eat the eyes first
