When you say we are "#2 in defensive rebounding", do you mean number of defensive rebounds per game? Or do you mean defensive rebound %? Because RPG can simply be attributed to our high pace -> more shots put up in a game = more rebounds to get.

Rockets is doing better than expected and Asik is a big part of it.

    Whatever an advanced analysis says.

My 'dumb guy sitting in a chair watching with his eyes' test says Asik is very mediocre at defense.

Good character guy and great rebounder, no doubt!

i believe he means %. the Rockets aren't actually that high in raw defensive rebounds but their %s are very good (because the Rockets opponents hit their shots).

i don't watch the NFL at all but i imagine it'd be easier to do what you describe in the NFL? the NBA is a fairly physical league but you basically can't touch a guy who's shooting. So then you have degrees of contesting. One player completely misses his man and then jumps desperately at a guy and flies by him (looks like effort but utterly useless), another player gives solid contest, third guy tries to put a hand in someone's face instead of reaching for the ball, 4th guy gives lackadaisical effort and just waives his hand a feet away with no impact whatsoever, 5th guy actually gets physical but the refs miss it. Those would be such different situations.

By the way, not sure if you saw it, there's a Goldberry pdf going around (from MIT Sloan conference) that kind of tries to tackle that issue in a way. He looks at FG% and such when certain defenders are near the player. It's not perfect (a defender may be near but he may be scratching his nose for all we know) but it'll probably get more and more useful in time.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>.@<a href="https://twitter.com/asikomer">asikomer</a> for Defensive Player of the Year! Omer is the #1 defensive rebounder in the NBA and #1 in paint protection (no rim, FTA, oReb)</p>&mdash; Daryl Morey (@dmorey) <a href="https://twitter.com/dmorey/status/320283737466236931">April 5, 2013</a></blockquote>
    <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Morey has a "paint protection" stat based on shots at the rim, FTA, and oReb for the opponent when the player is on the floor. According to that, apparently Omer is #1.

Does anyone want to take a stab at reverse-engineering this stat? I'm curious how some of the other really good paint protectors in the league (Sanders, Hibbert, Howard, Chandler, Duncan, etc.) would rank.

Sometimes it's more important to contest shots than to over-focus on the defensive rebound.

    Of course you want both.

Stats are important, but they are over analysed in my opinion.

With the ability to quickly jump from standstill, athleticism, and just as importantly, agility. The difference is that Asik is a position defender (big body obstructing an easy score), where as Ben Wallace was a highly mobile, aggressive defender (weak side defense and able to move his feet).

Like McHale said about K-Love when he drafted him - "in a league full of guys who are hyper athletic and jump really high, Kevin Love boxes out.". I think that explains Big Ben as well.

Having watched the many big men, we've played at the center position and the various ones on other team, I disagree with these Analytics. Asik while not the best defensive big men in the league is in the top 10 and maybe top 5 night in and night out.

Whenever faced with centers or Power forwards he can usually keep them at bay besides athletic freaks like Hibbert and maybe Howard from a few seasons back.

I don't know what the analytics say, but when Omer is off the floor, the impact of the dude not being out there is obvious. We're much worse defensively. I think he's growing as a player before our eyes. He's more effective in more minutes, in my opinion, clearly alters shots, even if multiple block games are only here and there, and scares the hell out of opposing players contemplating driving to the hoop. He's a very important part of our offense, setting huge picks that are highly effective. Recently, he showed evidence of becoming a better man defender, covering Timmy D like a blanket and doing a number on both him and the Spurs, being a huge part of our victory. Omer is clearly more comfortable now than he was earlier in his starting role. He's showing more leadership. Heck, in the last game, he was directing Jones, busy having a career night as a pro, where to go on the court at both ends. That career night for Jones was helped a lot by the huge fellow playing next to him. I got the impression that Omer likes the guy, which bodes well for for the future of Mr. Jones, in my opinion.

Hell, I'm deeply impressed with him. I think he's going to continue to improve and I will be totally pissed if Morey gets a wild hair up his arse and includes him in an off-season deal this summer. Don't do it, Daryl. Don't ****ing do it. Guys like Osik are rare in today's league.

If Asik is not a good defender, this "advanced" analytics is not advanced at all
