I believe the issue with Roy is the number of years, not the salary, which both sides agree will be the max.

the League is doing Portland any favors with the D Miles incident from last year. Karma's biting Pritch in the old rear end!

4 yrs vs. 5 or if they give him 5 yrs, maybe not quite at the max. IMO, the Blazers will give him 5 yrs at the max and then move on the Aldridge, who by the way, has the same agent as Roy. If the Blazers make it tough on Roy to get a 5 yr max deal, perhaps they can get Aldridge to take less.

They will probably end up caving in to both guys before the season.

It sounds like he wouldn't be the only one with an axe to grind, especially after the Darius Miles debacle where he tried to strong-arm every general manager in the league. Taking out a bogus injury exception on Miles and then blacklisting him attests both to bad scruples and foresight--it can't be good for future signings. I also agree with the posters that criticize him for being conservative; he seems to have bought the relentless internet hype surrounding his players, and will only sign off on lopsided trades with ailing franchises. The analogies to John Paxson are right-on, though Paxson hadn't been able to acquire a franchise player by the time his team peaked.

They're really playing with fire, as far as Brandon Roy is concerned.

Yes, a lot of undeserved max contracts have been given out, but these "sit; heel; beg" lessons aren't gonna cut it.

There are 29 other teams in the league who would pay him what he wants if they could (well, not Milwaukee, maybe not the Clippers, but you get the idea). And the owners of THOSE teams are not made out of Microsoft's money.

The only downside of drafting a great amount of talent like the Blazers is having to pay them once their rookie contracts are up. The decreased salary cap won't help them either.

Exactly! Perfect example of a scenario that happened just recently.

Hinrich is a perfect fit in the Blazers system, yet they want to clutch onto back ups in Bayless and Fernandez. Is there even room for both of those guys on their roster? I know they play different positions, but they have similar games attacking the basket.

You make a very good point about what Pritch is probably doing. While it makes sense, it is ridiculously stupid! If Pritch starting behaving "agitated, panicked or desperate" after Hedo changed his mind, can you imagine what he'd do if Roy decided to bolt?

Roy has a $5 mill qualifying offer in 2010-11. If Pritch does not extend a max or near-max contract this summer, anyone else WILL next summer.

Btw, for those of you arguing that Roy is not worth the max, I ask why? He is easily a top 3 SG in this league. A proven clutch player. A consummate professional. Good work ethic and understands what it takes to win the game, not fill his stat sheet. And most importantly, a leader.

Why wouldn't a team offer this proven and young (25 in 2010) player a max contract over say a 29 yo Joe Johnson or a 28 yo Dwayne Wade? The only reason I could think of was that you have a better chance of winning now with those other two guys.

However, is that marginal increased probability worth it when D-wade is in the 3rd yr of his contract and suffers another serious injury or Joe Johnson's production is tailing off?

Personally, I'd love to take Roy at the max to lead the Rockets. He seems to fit the direction this team is going in.

Pritchard comes off like the smart-and-smug guy every crowd has. He'd steal things from you just to show that he could. Now nobody wants to do business with him.

    morey pwns pritch

portland screwed up bad by not going after odom and instead offering milsap that deal. granted odom wants a little more than that milsap deal but if pritch went all out like morey did trying to 'woo' the players then maybe he could have lured odom away.

Pritchard's moves have all been master strokes of luck.

    1. Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge. Both players are great players in their own right but I doubt Pritchard could have ever imagined them both being All-Star caliber players. My belief is that when Pritchard traded Foye for Roy, it was because Pritchard knew he needed a "ready now" rookie that won't take 2-3 years to develop since 2-3 years could mean either contract extension for a GM or walking papers. Drafting Tyrus Thomas and then trading him for Aldridge is just another "safe" move IMO. Thomas had the hype and the potential but going with Aldridge he knew he could have a 15-10 player on his hands.

    2. Greg Oden. This was just sheer luck of the bouncing balls. I'm not going to fault Pritchard and the Blazers for drafting Oden because he can still be a productive center in the league but the more Kevin Durant improves and the more that SF chasm gets bigger, the more this will eventually blow up in Pritchard's face. Say what you want about Pryzbilla but he is a very good defensive center and a guy that can get you rebounds. That's pretty much all you need from your starting center if your other four positions features great players.

    3. Jerryd Bayless. Pritchard swapped picks with the Pacers for Bayless. Now Bayless' potential is still up in the air and could still very well turn into a good point guard but if he's going to be stuck behind Steve Blake and Brandon Roy at point guard, there's really no reason to have traded for him in the first place.

Everyone praised his ability to draft Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez, Martell Webster, keeping Travis Outlaw, etc. and how these players give Portland one of the deepest teams in the league. But guess what? Those guys are the ones that gets put through the trade machine by Pritchard all the team (with Sergio already gone). So much for the vote of confidence for your young role players.

And, lest we forget, this is the same guy that threatened NBA teams about signing and playing Darius Miles because he wanted that precious cap room for this summer, the same cap room that hasn't moved all summer. Then you want to go and try to screw around with Utah, trying to pour in money into a player that you don't really need at a position you're already pretty good at.

Oh yea, you manage to sit idly and lowball contract extensions to the two best players on your team and also manage to go against your own coach's wishes of bringing in solid veterans to complement the younger players.

I'm glad that Portland finally has a good team that they can root for and don't have to worry about its players getting arrested for stupid **** but I wouldn't be surprised if Roy and Co. bolts after their contracts are up.

Don't forget that the max in 2010-11 will be lower, if the NBA predictions of a $50.4 mil cap are true. The first year of a max contract for a 5-6 yr veteran would be 25% of salary cap, $12.6 mil.

For comparisoin, T-mac will make $23.2 mil for 09-10 season.

Brandon Roy's max contract would be about half of T-mac's salary!

Any team with salary cap space will offer Roy the max salary for max years.

I won't even bother with the other comments. Getting Roy and Aldridge were "master strokes of luck" just because few predicted either player would be this good? Gimme a break. It's called good drafting. He wanted Roy and got him by trade, nothing lucky about that at all. Roy was the best player in that draft. The Blazers knew who they wanted and got their man. Like a lot of people here, maybe you just resent Pritchard for snagging Roy in front of the Rockets. Regarding Aldridge, getting him for Tyrus Thomas from the Bulls was highway robbery. He made Paxson look like a complete fool.

Having the #4 and #7 picks in a draft and turning it into the two best players in the draft isn't luck, it's a great drafting. If Morey had done it, you would be singing his praises. Let's be reasonable.

BetterThanEver, you make a interesting point. The decreasing salary cap puts max contracts in a brand new light.

No problem. It's the worst case scenario for a salary cap drop to $50.4 mil, so I don't think it can get that bad. The current cap is $57.7 mil, only a 1.6% decline from last year's cap.

Here is another interesting twist, if it were to drop to $50.4 mil.

    T-Mac
    $23.2 mil '09-10

If he were to sign a new max contract with another team, he would qualify for 35% of salary cap as a 10+yr vet. Assuming the worst case scenario of a $50.4 mil cap by the NBA is true. Here are the new numbers.

    T-Mac
    $17.64 mil '10-11

He would take a $6 mil paycut in his first year with a new team.

The other option is to sign an extension with the Rockets. He would continue receiving 5% raises on his current salary.

    T-mac
    $24.36 mil

I don't see how we keep T-mac with a decreasing salary cap. I don't see us doing an extension and trading him later, either. He would be a huge albatross contract.

Here's a fantastic story from the NY times on the impact of a decreasing salary cap on free agent negotiations for 2010.

Wait, so not overspending for Lamar Odom is a bad thing now? Turkoglu would be a great signing, but the contract/price he was asking for was simply unreasonable. Yes, their SF position is a weakness, but getting Webster back should help some regardless. If Utah doesn't match and they get Millsap, they will be better for it. It would be fitting if that team (loaded with draft steals), acquired another steal in the draft like Millsap.
