Vikings star Adrian Peterson turns himself in, freed on bail NFL running back Adrian Peterson turned himself in to authorities in Texas early Saturday on afelony charge of child abuse, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said. He's accused of using a switch to discipline his son, according to his attorney. Shortly after, Peterson was freed on a $15,000 bail, authorities said. http://www.cnn.com/2014/09/13/justice/nfl-vikings-adrian-peterson/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
I get a kick out of the holier than thou crowd saying how bad this was and this isnt how to discipline kids You picture a little innocent four year old minding his business, when out of nowhere AP appears with a tree branch and starts tearin dat tail up. Listen we dont know what happened, this child in a few years will probably tell you, " oh yeah, I earned that @ss whoopin". The same people saying this isnt how you raise kids are the same people whos kids act like they aint never been out of the house when they go places and terrorize the innocent public while they standby oblivious.
Based on pictures and comments here is what we do know. 1. A FOUR year old pushed a 5 year old off a riding toy. 2. In his own words, Adrian Peterson took a switch and whipped the FOUR year old. 3. There are multiple open wounds covering multiple parts of the FOUR year old's body, including his scrotum. 4. In his own words, Adrian Peterson said the mom would be upset with him for one of the wounds on the FOUR year old's leg and that he "got kind of good wit the tail end of the switch". 5. In his own words, Peterson said "Got him in the nuts once I noticed," I never switched my children and I was never switched. My wife, family members and friends were never switched to the point where there were open wounds on multiple parts of their bodies. My kids never acted like terrors, nor did I, nor did my wife, family members or friends. If it makes me "holier than thou" to find it appalling that a FOUR year old has multiple open wounds on multiple parts of his body, then I will happily be called "holier than thou".
I think he overdid it. The kid is 4. I don't have kids but I'm pretty sure If I was the mom I wouldn't let my husband get away with that either. The thing is, was it a one time thing? Or did the little boy always come home like that after visiting dad? I have a feeling this is what they are investigating, to make sure the punishment fits the crime.
Again we can debate what's excessive but you've already made up your mind the bottom line of what's "allowed" for every parent to follow to a T. That's a a naive posturing way to think. My point was that you don't really have the right to pass judgment on all parents like your stance is the only way. I personally believe it was on the extreme side of corporal punishment, but I'm not ready to out and out say that was a clear case of child abuse.
Per WCCO... Cuts, welts and bruising on thighs, arms, hands, and back. 10 cuts on thighs Bruise-like marks on lower back Cuts on hands Describes cuts as "extensive" and "open wounds" There were some photo's in the report. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ljw5TkOaFQ This was apparently over a VIDEO GAME. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...or-negligent-injury-to-a-child-210420668.html Those photo's apparently were taken close to a full week after the incident. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...haps-the-worst-week-in-the-history-of-the-nfl Keep that in mind, those welt marks and bruises in the photo's are after a full WEEK to heal.
Always disgusted when I read the US, especially Texan view of child spanking, using belts, etc. Just because you turned out okay doesn't mean the act is horrible and not how you treat a child. Really glad that barely anyone does this in modern Europe, hope you guys one day will know better. An adult having to resort to violence (against a normal and psychologically healthy kid) because he can't control it is pathetic and weak, no matter what you say. If the child is mentally unstable and notoriously aggressive there are times where physical force is the only option, but only in that special case. Control children by teaching them what is wrong and right, words and being a role model are all you need.
Yeah im not going disagree that it was excessive and he went overboard especially if it was a four year old. You know you've seen those kids at the Taco Bell running, yelling and climbing on everything while the parents are more concerned with if they want hot or mild sauce? Thats the anti-switch family.
I understand your view on not having to resort to violence and the psychological aspect of the child, but I still believe spanking is a good form of punishing a child to teach them what's right and what's wrong. At that age, children immediately understand that they've done something wrong if also explained what they did was wrong. However, AP took it way too far. If your spanking a child to teach them, that's fine. But spanking them so badly that it leaves open wounds, I would call CPS as well.
Nothing wrong with spanking with a hand. Plenty wrong with using a weapon to spank. Very wrong to cause open wounds when spanking.
What's the relevance? If you punish people hard enough, you can stop people from doing anything. Yes, if you beat the crap out of people for doing bad things, you can probably stop them from doing bad things. If you gave the death penalty for speeding, no one would speed either. Doesn't make it any less stupid, though.
And statistically, people who were abused are more likely to abuse when they grow up - whether physical, sexual, psychological, etc. AP even said it openly - he did to this kid what his dad did to him. So yeah, you'll stop your kid from yelling because they want hot sauce. But who knows what potential problems you create 30 years down the line.
Generalize much? Based on Peterson's statements (in his own words), it can be inferred that this was not the first time he did this. That being the case, why did the FOUR year old misbehave again?
My kids are well-behaved, and you can damn well be sure I'm anti-switch. More importantly, I'm anti-open wound to children at the hands of their parents. That's effing disgusting. We don't need to examine generalities here. We're talking about a specific instance with very specific consequences which were documented, and which a doctor felt concerned about enough to report to authorities.
I think the idea that is kind of overlooked, is that this was a VIDEO GAME. That's a little overboard to me. Sure, I got beat as a child with sticks, belts, and even spanked, but this is too extreme. The kid is 4 and it's a FREAKING VIDEO GAME
He overdid it. There is nothing wrong with a few whacks to the butt (thats what I got) but getting the thighs (and scrotum once) that many times is extreme.
Here is another text from Peterson: 'He got about 5 more pops than normal. He didn't drop one tear! So that was another indicator I'll have try another system with him" Does anyone else read that as since the FOUR year old didn't cry with this round of punishment Peterson would have to increase the punishment in the future?
