"Yao: I will never yell give me the damn ball!" - Translated from a Chinese link in sina

It's an ugly game, Yao said, In most time, we didn't use our advantages. We should do better defense and we gave pistons so many second chances to score.

Yao admitted every US coach he met thought he could still do better in scoring. Yao picked up a bottle of water and said, now I am like the bottle, they do not want to fill it up right now.

I know i am not Hakeem, Yao said, I do not have his speed and hustle. I am not used to demand the ball from teammates. At most, I walked to them and asked them in private. If you let me yell at them give me the damn ball while facing all fans in the stadium, I can never do that .

I attribute the problem you described more to his perfectionism. Looks like he doesn't like to take bad shots or force a play. His confidence gets down pretty easily after some bad plays on his part. Maybe it's perfectionism, or maybe he just doesn't want to be blamed, which I kinda understand coming from the same background as his.

I understand it, but he better learn it's perfectly OK to yell in this culture, especially if you are the superstar on the team.

I think my #4 will also be agreed by most posters:

    4. Yao should start using his elbows to protect rebounds.

I think everyone has been saying that for a long time.

Also your hearthrob said something like...IIRC....the day when Yao stops asking for the ball and demanding it will make him a happy man.

What is this, Yao's 7th season? And we're still hearing about this crap? Good grief Yao. If Yao was really a "team player", he would understand his potential to dominate, and would understand he needs to demand the ball for the sake of the TEAM.

What else can you ask Yao to do? He has dominating with the ball everytime he's had it.

Asking Yao to demand the ball is just like asking Chris Paul or Steve Nash to score more instead of set up their teammates. Clearly, they are all capable of doing that job, but it's just not happening because they care more about their teammates and winning then themselves.

    You can't change that.

Bad analogy. CP3 and Nash's main role on their respective teams is the run the offense and set up their teammates, the larger picture is to get points the easiest way for their team so sometimes they will call their own number if they see an advantage. Yao's main role on offense is to score since he should have advantage against most centers in the NBA. His main role is not to set the picks, it's not to look for his teammates, it's not facilitate. His main role on offense is to score period.

The type of personality he has is similar to a Chris Paul or a Steve Nash. He is just too unselfish not to score. Steve Nash has been asked many times for his team to score, but he just hasn't done so because he'd rather have his teammates happy. You could say the same about Yao. The only difference is that Yao won't strictly scream or yell for the ball, while Nash will always have the ball in his hands.

It's not the perfect analogy, but I couldn't think of another one.

I think Adelman can adjust to Yao's personality. A couple things are very obvious-
    1. Yao is pretty dominant in the post when he has a single defender behind him and he struggles when he is doubled quickly or he has an athletic defender fronting him.
    2. Yao does alot better when plays are called for him and there is ball movement and screens to get him an entry pass he can catch.

Adelman must stress to the team how to re-set Yao in the low post after a double team- before too much time goes off the shot clock.

When Yao is fronted they need to get into a pick in roll quicker than they do now. Yao needs to be coached to immediately set up a high pick and roll and the guards need to be in attack mode. Right now when Yao is fronted he tries to hold his hand up like someone is going to try and lob a pass over the top- that is a turnover and no one usually makes that pass for that reason.

Yao, when you are fronted get out and set the pick.

The othe option for the fronting is to set double screens on the baseline to get Yao the ball on the opposite side of the lane.

Also late in games there should be some set plays to set screens for Yao on the low block so the entry pass can be made easier.

I totally agree that in the playoffs it is going to be critical to get Yao the ball late in the 4th quarter and I don't see him demanding the ball-

So Adelman deal with his personality and coach to his strengths.

You do know what a point guard's role is on most basketball teams, right? (aaron brooks notwithstanding)

Comparing Yao to point guards is not a compliment IMO.
