Why does it seem like people are still misinterpreting the OP? He isn't saying RA should've called a timeout between the two free throws, as icing Williams after he already missed one would make no sense. After he missed the first FT, there is no excuse for Deke to not subbed into the game. Keep Landry at one side, Deke on the other. If that were the case, I would've atleast had the peace of mind to know that the Rockets did all they could to ensure the rebound. And when they got the rebound, they could've just called a timeout, and drew up a play to hopefully either tie or win the game. But by keeping T-Mac & Battier in there and allowing them to go for the rebound over a much taller and stronger/fatter Okur, I cannot stop myself from wondering just what could've been.
I was thinking the same thing. Even if he hasn't played a minute in the game, he's still got the best 3-pt shot on the team. Bobby Jackson would not have been my choice for the last 3, either.
Again, 1. Couldn't get a REBOUND when it matter. Where was Deke, Loren, Scola. All our big men should have been there when D. Williams missed those layups? 2. T-Mac ONE, I REPEAT ... ONE attempt in the fourth quarter!!!!! That's the game.
I don't think this is Adelman's mistake. With Yao and Rafer, we are a better team than Utah. With Rafer, we are as good as Utah. If Rafer played in the first two games, we would be 2-2 now. Without Yao and Rafer, we are a worse team than Utah. Simple and plain. There are not much that Adelman can do.
Agreed that it was a mistake. You need to have your best rebounders on the floor in a situation like that. Hayes or Mutombo should have been in.
If I'm a utah jazz player and hayes is in the game, i would put a lot of consideration into intentionally fouling him.
Did anyone think, What if Coach wasn't goinf to take a time out after the rebound? He has done it before, would you want Deke, Alston, Hayes on the floor at the same time?
You are not going to call a timeout automatically after the second miss. Bad assumption. Landry had the rebound and it was knocked away by his own teammate. There is no blame to assign here.
If by this... "Williams JUST missed the first free throw. It was a crucial free throw that he missed and he probably feels the weight of the world pressuring him. Do I really want to call a timeout and let him mentally regroup? Give Sloan a chance to calm him down? Or do I want him to shoot his second free throw immediately while he's probably still very apprehensive?" Then yes, I did read your post. It definitely seems like you are implying Adelman shouldn't be calling a timeout after Deron's first missed free throw, which I agree with. But obviously, RA could've subbed in Deke after that first missed free throw without having to take a timeout. And then if Williams had missed again, we'd atleast have Deke or Chuck there, which you can't say wouldn't have given HOU a better chance at rebounding the ball over T-Mac/Battier being in that position, and then taken a timeout when they got control of the ball after the second missed FT.
You call timeout as soon as the ball is rebounded and that doesn't happen. Utah can't foul Hayes away from the ball.
Ditto, and he did it after Okur got the rebound ... it's funny, we lost last year cuz we could get a rebound in Game 7
