No love for Mike Rozier? J/K. Earl's the obvious answer, but I'll play along. Childress is #2 for me as he was a beast in the middle as was Matthews. Dish was an alltime favorite of mine, also. Shoot, wouldn't Chuck Cecil be an upgrade over anyone not named Dunta? Big Al as Mike LB and moving Meco outside gives me wood. So does adding Lathon or Sean Jones opposite Mario. Our locker room would suffer, as Sean was a locker room lawyer, but I'd take that sacrifice faster than those old Oilers could give up a big lead. Trivia: who was the RB that had the huge year (2nd half actually) one year with the Oilers? Led the league over the 2nd half of the season, and was during the Rozier era...i can't think of his name right now and it's driving me nuts!
I still have a Houston Chronicle poster of him titled "Talk of the Town". It didnt last long afterward, but his burst on the scene at the time was fun talk.
Yep! I'm still puzzled why it didn't translate beyond that stretch. He had the physical tools to be a productive back...kind of in the Barry Word mold. Like Word, though, he went gently into that good night... Obviously you know the name, but I'm curious who else remembers him. Additional hint...played in the early 90s and was in the league for 8 years.
The first name that popped into my head (even before Earl) was Ray Childress. Someone please correct me if i'm mistaken, but didn't he lead the team in tackles for a couple of years? That's ridiculous for a D-Lineman.
Correct on Brown, although I thought Rozier and he shared the backfield for a year. It could've been Lo White ahead of Brown. Regardless, good job on calling Brown. Since you do remember him, do you recall the reason for his falloff? He was extraordinary for that 2nd half of the season, middling before it, and unemployed soon afterwards. I don't recall any Domanick Davis/Williams type injury at all. He just went the way of Christian Okoye, I swear! Lol.
No one will supplant Campbell as the #1 choice, definitely not at RB. But, another player who could really help the Texans right at RB from the former Oilers.... Eddie George.
Earl or Ray Childress puts us into 11 win territory. Both and go ahead and hand us the Lombardi Trophy and save time.
I just remember Gary Brown kept going the wrong direction on handoffs from Moon and fumbled a lot. It was uncanny, Warren Moon eventually just expected Brown to go the wrong direction and would hit the hole himself
Yeah, I think Rozier was to the Falcons and out of football by then, and Brown just ended up taking White's job. The Oilers had a stable of decent RBs: Rozier, Pinkett, Highsmith, that they had to unload once Pardee came along. I think if they'd kept Highsmith, White and their TE Jamie Williams they could have had a respectable West Coast Offense.
Literally ate himself out of the NFL, gained an obscene amount of weight. They used to call him "Tecmo Man" because he loved playing Tecmo Bowl, but it turned out he really was a loafer. With Eddie George tearing it up and the Oilers getting another good draft pick after '95, not a hard cut for Fisher to make.
