Maybe the fan was just concerned about his potassium levels?

But in all seriousness, that's ****ed up and I'm surprised it happened at AT&T park of all places. San Fran is about as culturally diverse a city as you'll find.

Unfortunately there are racist in the Bay Area plus the Bay Area isn't too far away from the Central Valley which is rife with racist and used to have problems with white power groups.

Definitely! San Francisco is actually less racially integrated than Houston, especially for black and hispanic populations with white ones.

Maybe I need to read the article, but couldn't someone throw a banana without it having any connotation other than: I wanted to throw something fairly harmless at this baseball player? There must have been more to it, and I'll check the article.

EDIT: Okay, I read it, and the player (and the article/author) interpret it as a historically racist act. I'm just saying... I've been all over the country, am pretty aware, am middle-aged... and I did not realize a thrown banana had one and only one meaning. I am willing to bet a young fan was also unaware of the meaning and tossed it to have fun, without the connotation received. Oh well. If I am just clueless, it won't be the first time.

I wondered if the writer was aware that there has been a worldwide tomato shortage the last several years. Maybe that impacted the fruit purchasing decision. Cali peps seem to be on top of these types of things and the banana was a more economical and environmentally friendly heckling decision.

    Too much benefit?

I heard about the story earlier on the radio and didn't even consider the racist implications. Didn't even cross my mind. Ugh...I hope that isn't what it was about.

A black man had a banana thrown at him... not a real jump to assume racial intentions. It happens more often that you would expect.

You're absolutely right...I just hope that wasn't what it was. It just didn't occur to me when I heard it at first on the radio....really didn't occur to me until I saw it in here in D&D.

Not a fan of Eric Holder..... but I saw it happen at Minute Maid Park when I was working the scoreboard before the game. It also recently happened at a Man U game and if memory serves me right it happened at an NHL game recently.

No, 4 times in the last few years that I am aware of.

I tell you what "Bob Marley", why don't you tell me what is the acceptable number of banana tosses at black athletes.... is it 5, 10, 20?

    Thank you in advance.

It is possible that it is a misunderstanding.... most of the banana tossing happens in soccer in Europe. It sure seems that there has been more racial tension the last decade or so.
