That really depends on what movie you've see. I remember always thinking that John Cho guy was one dimensional (the Asian dude from Harold & Kumar)

But then I saw him in a few other less known films like Better Luck Tomorrow and actually changed my mind.

I think pretty much any non A-listers listed here are capable of playing different characters in smaller films, but since they're smaller and less known...nobody's seen them.

Thanks for telling us you're 16.

A lot of people missed the point of this movie. Noel Gugliemi is a great example, Tom Cruise is not...

    Just to add
"Whoa I'm stuck in Transylvania with hot vampire chicks."
"Whoa I'm a surfing FBI agent."
"Whoa I'm the Buddha." Which oddly worked very well.

If we are talking about the most versatile actors I am going to nominate Ed Norton.

Tom Cruise doesn't belong in this thread. Look at his portfolio:

The Outsiders (cool, dumb, poor gang type)
    Jerry Maguire (cool sports agent)
Days of Thunder (cool sports car driver)
Vanilla Sky (cool guy/ugly crash victim)
Mission Impossible movies (cool do-it-all type)
    Far and Away (cool immigrant)
    Valkyrie (cool german Hitler overthrower)
Last Samurai (cool American turned Samurai)
    Magnolia (cool public speaker)
    Eyes Wide Shut (cool pervert)
A Few Good Men (cool legal military defender)
    The Firm (cool lawyer)
Interview with a Vampire (cool vampire)
    Cocktail (cool bartender)
The Color of Money (cool pool shark)
    Top Gun (cool pilot)
    Rain Man (cool brother)
All the Right Moves (cool high schooler football player who pass interferes)
    Risky Business (cool entrepeneuring pimp)
    Taps (cool wannabe soldier)
Born on Fourth of July (cool marine)
    Minority Report (cool pre-crime officer)
    Tropic Thunder (cool fat guy)

Yes, he plays a cool person in every single movie. That is where it ends. ;)

Indeed. You're describing character actors. This thread really does only apply to the A-listers who are either to lazy to branch out or lack the ability to.

I think there is a difference between type casting and an actor who just seems to play himself no matter what the role is. It never gets deeper than the usual facial expressions, tones of voice, etc. than you are used to from him.

Keanu Reeves is an ultimate example.

Cruise doesn't belong on this list. Don't believe me? Watch him in Magnolia. He's incredible.

Will Smith doesn't play the same role...

    Independence Day
    Pursuit of Happyness
    Ali

    are all vastly different roles.

I think you're thinking about Legend with Mia Sara.

Which Tom Cruise movie was it where a guy tries to slip his hand into the front of a chick's jeans while they're making out? I just remember that scene being a hot topic back then.

I've heard this mentioned before, but Mel Gibson is a good example. Current insanity aside, he's a great actor but does always gravitate toward the martyr-type role.

Braveheart, Mad Max, Patriot, We Were Soldiers, Conspiracy Theory, Man Without A Face, Ransom, Edge of Darkness, Signs, Lethal Weapon ..all these movies he's suffering from some kind of loss or risking/sacrificing his life for the greater good.

Even the movies he's directed reflects that, like Braveheart, Passion, Apocalypto.
