I think it would be easier and more interesting to list actors who either can play multiple parts or one dimensional actors who have successfully played outside their typical casting.

Ok, here are a couple of typecast nerds from 1980's cinema. Anthony Michael Hall (Farmer Ted) and Courtney Gaines (The nerd who screams "You ***** on my house!" in Can't Buy Me Love)playing the parts of cold blooded hitmen in "The Killing Grounds".

Gary Oldman. That guy just always keeps with the consistency and stays within the median, never challenges himself

There is not a more diverse actor in Hollywood than Rob Schneider. He's played an animal, hot chick, gigolo's, and a stapler.

It's funny how much people's perception and preference of on-screen personalties is rooted in an innate, first-impression kind of intangible sense of how "cool" the character(s) comes across, or moreover how authentic the performance ends up feeling to the viewer. People perceive trends, or the absence of, over an actor's body of work almost always along rigid, almost inexplicable qualitative lines of character compatibility.

I hear people saying Marky Mark of all people is a one trick pony, and then assert that Adam Scott is gold, which I wouldn't disagree with, but the guy isn't exactly a five-tool shortstop either. Just interesting how much of the brand loyalty we have to actors and celebrities is rooted in that x-factor of likability, and how differently that can be perceived.

I think playing the "same character" and "playing different characters the same way" are being taken as the same thing here...

Wahlberg plays different roles, but always acts the same for the most part. I guess it's due to a mix of the role allowing it and him not being able to transform himself.

Your opinion on Sunshine has no bearing on whether he played the same character or not. And he didn't.

You know who I get tired of basically playing himself over and over again? Dustin Hoffman. Can't believe he's only limited himself to playing a preppy college graduate, a street bum, a felonious criminal, an autistic savant, a middle-aged woman, a stand-up comedian, Captain Hook, and the same-old, same-old in 50 other roles.

    ONE TRICK PONY!!!!

(P.S. whoever said DeNiro, Pesci, and Pacino is either obviously kidding or has a very limited filmography).

A friend of mine said that almost every Ben Stiller movie is the same or he plays the same type of character who gets in over his head.
