But guys like Tom Petty, Van Morrison, and Willie show that ACL is all about the music. These guys are old school and don't put out tons of records anymore, they just want to play at ACL just like they did 20-30 years ago. I really don't see ACL as having a cutting edge and I don't think the people that have been putting together ACL have had that in mind. Guys like Allman Brothers, Al Green, Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Willie bring music that a lot of the younger crowd don't know, and personally I think it is better than any of the new stuff that comes out now a days.
Jet, and the Killers are hardly cutting edge. Franz Ferdinand is borderline, IMO. It looks like ACL is a mixed bag.
i found all those acts to be quite boring, forgettable and unoriginal. cutting edge means doing something different and most new bands today would hardly qualify. acl isnt coachella or even lollapallooza. it caters more to the 107.1 crowd than anything else.
those groups are good and have good albums and songs. i dont want to pay $100+ to see groups that i can see for free or for $5 downtown. look there's plenty of hippy bands at ACL, give us some bands that we can actually hear on the radio. i personally would dump Tom Petty and Van Morrison. if we had to get some geezers, might was well be some awesome ones like Phil Collins or Michael Jackson.
not only am i not especially looking forward to ACL this year, i've actually considered selling my 3 day tickets... on the other hand, i drove for 9+ hours during the Rita fiasco to make it to ACL last year. so it's 2005 in a landslide.
not quite understanding the van morrison and petty hate. i've never seen petty live but i hear they rock and put on a great show. and van morrison is van freakin' morrison! the fact that you'd replace those two with phil collins and michael jackson is ridiculous.... unless you're talking about getting a time machine and grabbing the MJ from 1985.
since you axed - friday - asleep at the wheel, gnarls barkley, cat power, a little of okkervil (they are from here so its not a big deal, but im friends w/ the rhythm section so id like to see them getting to play acl), thievery corp, sparklehorse, tragically hip, van morrison sat - ghostland obervatory, ian mclagan, tv on the radio, the shins vs. los lobos (will have to split time), calexico, guy clark, iron and wine, willie, massive attack sun - nothing that interests me really till 4:00 - buckwheat zydeco, ween (sorry matisyahu), new pornographers, flaming lips, tom petty. actually, when i type out everything i highlighted thats enough stuff to keep me content, but i still dont think it will be better than 2005.
i dont hate them, they just seem out of place for ACL as headliners. Phil Collins is timeless. Michael Jackson returns, that would be a world wide event!
if i booked the festival, people would swimming across the ocean to see this thing. at My ACL: they would serve ALCOHOL, at jo mama's they would serve GERITOL
excuse me david robinson, must i correct you that i'm the mvp: http://www.coachella.com/artists/ Coldplay Oasis Franz Ferdinand Bloc Party Massive Attack Matisyahu Damian Jr Gong Marley Gnarls Barkley Cat Power and The Memphis Rhythm Band Oh, aren't these the same artists that play ACL fest?? oh david robinson, do you need some people to help guard me, the Dream? http://www.lollapalooza.com/default.asp?fd=1 oh no! some of the same artist at ACL! oh no!
oasis, coldplay and franz ferdinand didnt play coachella. didnt you even look at your link? and congrats on picking out 5-10 bands out of 100 or so which played at mulitple festivals. and when the guy who does booking for acl also does the booking for lolapalooza you are going to have many of the same bands. oh no!
I like Phil Collins and Michael Jackson as much as the next guy, but you wanna talk about being out of place? Tom Petty and Van Morrison are 2 of the top best classic rock artists IMO. Not everyone is going to see Franz Ferdinand or String Cheese Incdient, these are guys you can see quite often. Tom Petty is headlining for a reason dude.
WRONG!!! did i say it had to be that year? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coachella_Valley_Music_and_Arts_Festival 2002 would see the return of the two day format, and saw a reunited Siouxsie & the Banshees. Björk and Oasis were brought in to headline, with supporting acts including Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, and Cornershop. Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, and BT also headlined the dance music genre of the event. This year was considered Coachella's best yet, and proved to the local community that the event was capable of bringing in money and ending without conflict. In 2005, promoters tried to ride the wave of last years success by booking the biggest band on the touring circuit, Coldplay (who were approached to headline in 2003). The return of Nine Inch Nails also sparked interest (NIN had been approached to play since the beginnings in 1999). Both bands had new albums coming out, and both attracted near sold-out crowds. Old timer british rockers New Order also played, and keeping in the Coachella tradition, both Bauhaus and Gang of Four were reunited and brought in. The Chemical Brothers also played, marking their fourth appearance. what now sean elliot?
ill take that to be a big fat NO on you actually reading the link you posted. coachella is marketed for 20-early 30's. lolapalooza the same. acl is more diverse and tries to cater to all age/demographic groups. you have country, indie rock, jam bands, classic rock, soul, adult contempo, rock en espanol, electronica, ect. and thats what in part makes this one of the better festivals out there.
i did read the link. i added coldplay and oasis cause i knew they already played that festival, plus the wikipedia link was there for the oasis/coldplay reference. are you going to disprove that oasis and coldplay never played coachella? i think acl was way better last year, and so does nearly 70% of clutchfans polled. maybe coachella is on par (hell maybe better since this years ACL isnt that good) but lolapalooza, come on!
i was in that 70%. as i already said, i thought 2005 was the best year yet. and i never said lollapalooza was better. learn to read dude.
so from your quote it sure sounds like you didnt like jet, or franz ferdinand as cutting edge.. you say i dont know i say you dont know acl catering to the 107.1 crowd, and that it isnt coachella or lollapalollza pardon me einstein, that sounds like you didnt like acl maybe i'm wrong and you are just using DON KING english
