I'm surprised that the San Francisco Outside Lands Fest had a much better lineup than ACL considering this was the first one ever. It seems like the ACL organizers are de-emphasizing the headliners, and instead focusing on lesser known acts.

Outside Lands had the following bands:

    Beck
    Radiohead
    Lupe Fiasco
    Manu Chau
    Steve Winwood
    Cake
    Tom Petty
    Jack Johnson
    Wilco
    Widespread Panic

    Just got back.

Manu Chao was the best act for me. Worth the price of the wristband.

    Followed by:
    MGMT
    Beck
    Jose Gonzalez
    The Black Keys
    Hot Chip
    CSS
    Rancounters

Just waking up. Thank G-d I took today off to recover. No way I could work today.

    My favorites were...

    Vampire Weekend
    Dan Dyer
    What Made Milwaukee Famous
    Delta Spirit
    Nakia & His Southern Cousins
    The Raconteurs

Agreed 100%. The set they played here a few years ago was what made me a fan. I'm not crazy about the latest stuff. Get back to what you do best...funk out.

Yeah, I hear ya. After first hearing them with the Houseman back in 2001, then at ACL 2 years ago I too tend to prefer them sans vocals as well (at least until last night). Fortunately they did their own thing at the start of their show and a spot or two in the last 20 minutes.

Still, last night's show was amazing. They had the perfect mix of doing their own thing as they did at the start of the show and then bringing on Chali 2na for several songs. His style meshed completely with their funk. It's rare to get the kind of buzz that was coming from the crowd during their set.

It was nice. Not hot as hell like past years, but it was a little dusty. Still not as bad as the dustbowl of 2005.

Absolutely. I was in the second row for that show and that's the only way to describe them.

That's good that the weather wasn't uncomfortably hot. I bet you were still beat down after 3 days there though. : )

Anytime you have that many walking in an open field you're going to kick up some dust. I was there in '05 and it was absolutely brutal before, during, and after the Coldplay show.

they didn't appear to have watered down the fields each night like they did in 05. it would have been nice.

rumor has it that acl '09 will be in mid-october, making for perfect festival weather.

    my favorite shows:
    1) foo
    2) sharon jones and the dap-kings
    3) gogol bordello

I've heard that it has to be in September to avoid conflicting with band tour schedules that start in the Fall. And it has to be on an away/open UT football weekend to avoid traffic disasters. So they pick whatever weekend UT is away in September.

Gogol Bordello was a pleasant suprise. Anyone else think the lead looked like Daniel Day Lewis?
