MGMT is great. I saw them in concert with Yeasayer opening for them a few months ago. It was the best concert I've seen all year.
For the most part I have never felt the headliners at ACL are worth the time. Usually too played out, but whats great about ACL is the amount of amazing artists that arent well known to date. One band everyone should check out is The Mars Volta. If you want entertainment and breathless music.... check it. Best performers ever
Very excited. Want to see Beck the most. I bet his show is incredible. Also very excited about seeing Vampire Weekend. I saw Mars Volta when I was in high school before they even relesed their first EP right after AT the Drive-in broke up. They were god awful, but they have grown a lot and I'm excited to see what they are like live now. Black Keys, Gnarls Barkely, the Raconteurs(of course), John Fogerty, G love.
I will be there the 2nd. Even taking half a day off to go down and spend a lovely afternoon in Austin.
Really? I thought the 06 lineup was pretty sweet (Tom Petty, Van Morrison, John Mayer, Flaming Lips, etc...) As for this year, I'm a big Foo Fighters fan and seeing Robert Plant (even w/ Krauss) should be great. Other than that, I agree that it's not that great of a lineup.
i'll be there the 3rd... got gov't mule on the 1st, panic the 2nd, and raconteurs the 3rd. should be a helluva weekend.
The grids are out. If they wanted to find a way to screw them up as much as possible, they did it. Beck at the same time as Plant/Krause? There are more trainwrecks than ever in the past. ACL 2008 Schedule
Schedule pretty much cements it - no go for me this year. The heat, the overcrowding, having to camp an hour in advance at stages, and now a crummy lineup & schedule. Day 1 is garbage, Day 2 is okay, and Day 3 is the only one I'd honestly be interested in checking out*. Evan *Obviously, no one has to agree with how I view the schedules. If you think Day 1 is the most awesome thing ever, that's peachy.
i like the people you mentioned (except john mayer) i guess bands past there prime dont really do it for me. seeing most of those 10-20 years ago would have been more my cake. im not complaining for the sake of complaining just how i see it. cant get that excited about that. i thought the flaming lips were darn good though.
I'm leaning towards Friday only -- just because it's the only day that isn't a complete nightmare and has the feel of the first couple fests. I had VIPs last year and still didn't go on Sunday it was so overcrowded (I sold it though $)
Friday looks pretty good actually: * 1:30 PM What Made Milwaukee Famous (AT&T blue room) * 2:30 PM Vampire Weekend (AMD) * 3:30 PM CSS (Dell) * 4:30 PM Gogol Bordello (AT&T) * 6:30 PM N.E.R.D (AMD) * 7:30 PM G. Love & Special Sauce (Dell) * 8:15 PM The Mars Volta (AMD)
Do VIP's allow you to go backstage and watch the shows away from the crowds? Can you buy VIP passes from ACL or are they by invite only? How much did you resell yours for?
It's ACL week. As usual, I have already checked out from being even remotely useful at work while going over the lineup for the 1000th time. Not sure why I do it. My plans always fall apart about the time I walk into Zilker on Friday. Good news...weather looks like it might be the best ever. High 80's-low 90's and reasonably cool in the evenings. Bad news...the lineup, while stacked with quality, was very poorly laid out. Too many instances of big names/good bands going up against each other. IMO, Beck and Plant/Krause should have their own nights. They could have split up Manu Chao and Mars Volta. Either way, should be another great festival. This is the one time a year I don't mind huge crowds/lines/traffic. It's also the 1 time a year my wife and I get to have our son stay with the grandparents so we can get back to our debaucherous ways of the past...even if just for a weekend.
Picked up my wristbands yesterday and am ready to hit Zilker. I haven't updated my lineup in months: http://acl08.sched.org/tattooedgroove
I hate that they made the pick up from 3-8 pm. I ain't driving down there in the middle of rush hour. There isn't a line on the day of any way so that's just easier. The question this year is...where to park? I've been at Shady Grove the last 2 years. It's been $20/day. I've heard the softball fields behind the restaurants only charge $10, but you have to get there early and it's easier to get out. Trying to leave Shady Grove with 40,000 people walking down Barton Springs is a bit of a pain in the ass.
I've got a press pass for Sunday so I hope to be enjoying the shady tent, the cold beer, and the mingling with musicians.
