Ovations are very nice guitars for the price. I am on my second one, a slim body, with electronics that sounds incredible. Sells for $600, I bought it from some kid for $100:D

The only other Acoustic guitar I would buy would be a Martin. Martin is simply the best Acoustic guitar made.

Be careful with ovations. People have a love/hate relationship with them (kind of like PC vs. Mac or Windows vs. Novell). You might end up getting your dad a guitar he loves or you might end up getting him one he's embarresed to play.

someone has suggested Cole-Clark which are a new aussie brand that are getting rave review... the accoustic is called the Fat Lady

    apparently Ben Harper uses them

going to go and see if this one store here stocks them and see what they sound like

I have never liked Ovation acoustics because I have never been able to get used to the round back. It never feels right with me whether I'm sitting or standing. That round back has always just felt weird to me.

Yea...I agree with that point. I have an acoustic-electric Ovation which I bought when I was a beginner. I didn't really know what to look for in a guitar. So, I ended up buying a guitar that was very uncomfortable to play because of the round back, had strings elevated way to high above the fretboard making playing chords and notes very difficult, and has absolutely the worst action on any guitar I've ever played. Even after I had some work done to lower the bridge, the action is still terrible on that guitar. I think I spent around $400 on the guitar at the time several years ago. I still have it and I often think about smashing it up Hendrix style. I still play it sometimes. Besides the poor action, the tone is terrible. Later, when I knew better and was at a music store, a guy was showing me this $2000 Ovation that had excellent tone, incredible action, and was easy to play. It was then I realized that Ovation was producing some really poor crap in their lower end guitars. The old saying applies I guess which is you get what you pay for.

I don't think I will buy another Ovation. I bet their still producing that cheapo crap on the low end. There are plenty of other brands that do much better at a similar price point.

That's the beauty of this slim-body Ovation I recently purchased. It is awesome as far as comfortable. Hell, I play it while laying on the couch watching TV. Huge difference between the regular body and the slim-body.

The first one I had was a regular body and took a while to get used to, but was very easy (great action) to play and sounded great. It did feel awkward playing it while standing up, so I never used it on stage.

I have a cheap ovation that had bad action purchased from a guy I worked with who was selling it for his son (I think I paid $250 for it which is why I bought it). I took the guitar to Neil Sargent and he made it play like butter. He does excellent work for very reasonable prices.
