I think it could be true. It R22 unit that is being phased out. Contractors probably want to get rid of these. On Ebay these sell for $789 brand new for the unit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-ton-Goodm...C-unit-Condenser-GSC130361-R-22-/390299572946
I have a Goodman unit. Probably 10 years old. When I asked my A/C man if it was a good unit he told me Goodman is at the bottom of the barrell. He said they break down more often than any other brand.
It's really not. You will find the exact same compressors, fan motors, contractors, capacitors, etc. across all AC manufacturers. The difference between one AC and another is build quality, and Goodman is fine, I assure you. Goodman has a bad rep because they are easy to get a hold of. They don't have strict guidelines as to which and how many contractors can buy them. So, it's pretty common for a dedicated Carrier dealer, for example, to trash Goodman because "anybody" can get it. The downside to Goodman's open contractor policy is that lots of lousy contractors end up doing lousy installs with Goodman equipment, which makes Goodman look bad. I wouldn't suggest to anyone to worry about brand of AC system. Just find a contractor you feel comfortable with, preferably NATE certified, and trust their judgement on what equipment you need.
