So opening a bigger question: are there no unwritten rules of conduct, while not totally illegal, are against the culture of the game. I follow hockey a little bit for example and when they cracked down too heavily on the enforcers you found a lot more little chicken**** type stuff going on on the ice. The direct opposite of what they thought they were doing. The enforcers actually kept the flow of the game better b/c they would punish some of this stuff. Is there not a basketball equivalent? There definitely is one in soccer and hockey.

There's a way to make a guy feel you without coming close to injuring him. According to some people taking offense at this what else is illegitimate in your eyes? In pickup games you don't really call much ticky tack stuff, but when guards keep reaching in on every defensive rebound is it not okay to swing a little elbow? How is this much different?

I think it's part of the game and you just have to make shots in the end. I don't let it get to me.

One thing that really does irk me is when someone on my own team calls my shot off. Gee thanks.

I think screaming/clapping is fine. Honestly, if you play basketball regularly, it should not affect your shot at all.

About the fake running at jump shooters, I have to admit I'm guilty of pulling the trick sometimes, although I always make sure I'm in control of my body to stop short and run past to the side. Obviously I only do it if I can't close out.

On the opposite side, having someone pretend to undercut you sucks especially playing with people that do not control their bodies well.

Not a huge fan of over the top trash talkers in pickup because they don't shut up.

Even worse is the teammates that constantly tell you to pass the ball to them or tell you to go get offensive rebounds while they sit there and jack up 3s.

Feel the same, I met like two guys that do that stuff, most people I meet play fair and competitive withotu having to do these nasty things.

I dont see the problem....unless you scare quite easily, it shouldnt disrupt your shot....NBA players deal with it and a lot more noise....It's basically under trash talking.

I had a guy just the other day pull the "charge at you while you're shooting" trick, but he forgot the bit about turning away at the last second. b*stard shoulder-tackled me at the three point line. At least there was some instant karma, as I nailed the shot anyway and the impact caused me to inadvertently bash my knuckles into the top of his head as I came down.

Drew some oohs from the people watching, though.

Funny thing... I've found more often than not that a defender charging at me kind of puts me into full-on, muscle-memory shooting mode. I don't think about the shot and make contested shots like that more often than I do uncontested shots.

Same here, I kinda go beast-mode when people play awesome D on me and I then begin to hit the most ridiculous shots out of dribbling, sometimes not even really looking at the rim. The more body contact and effort they put on guarding me, the more I get into rythm and make scoring runs.

Same with 3pt-contests and trying akward shots way behind the line or with one leg fadeaway etc.
But then again I'm not making easy shots in HORSE or after a match that I owned with highly contested shots. Guess it's a head issue, some people just need pressure to realize their potential and to give 100%.
