My wife are old (at least I feel that way), and she routinely falls aseep before ten o'clock at night--but we've started a tradition of going to Mardi Gras every year now, and we love it. Sure, you can spend all hours of the night partying in the quarter, but that's only a small part of what all is going on. New Orleans is already a GREAT place to visit, and Mardi Gras just seems to elevate everyone's mood. Outside of the quarter, there are parades every day, and although it may sound boring on paper, it's a friggin blast to go watch those things go by and collect all the throws they toss your way. If you want things a bit more sedate....the quarter is hoping during the day with shopping, buskers, happy people and good food and drink. The biggest weekend is right before fat tuesday, but we usually go the weekend before that. We'll catch two or three parades a day, and it's always a great time. We have no kids, but the parades are great for families as well.

I feel stupid, I forgot the water to dilute part. My response earlier about the water was then, obviously, incorrect.

Conrad's book isn't really great, but there are few resources all-in-one, so I guess that is why the writeup mentioned it. Better information can be found piecemeal.

Oh yeah, Lautrec preffered other alcohol to absinthe, so he is not quite in the Verlaine region (neither, actually, was Wilde if I remember correctly). Mostly, though, Lautrec just preffered sex.
