i lurk no more! Rockets settle on new logo By DAVID BARRON Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle If you see someone walking around Houston wearing a red cap bearing a white "R" that you suspect could resemble the Rockets' new logo ... you're right. Logos courtesy Houston Rockets It is the Rockets' new logo. Team employees have been distributing sample caps bearing the new logo to friends and acquaintances for the last two weeks. Another 800 or so will be mailed over the next week - in boxes marked "Top Secret" - to Houston corporate executives and to potential suite purchasers at the new downtown arena. The caps provide the public's first look at the new design that will adorn Rockets caps, T-shirts, jackets - and, yes, the team's uniforms - beginning with the 2003-2004 NBA season this fall. Tim McDougall, the Rockets' vice president for marketing, remains close-mouthed about details of the new uniform, which is being assembled by NBA officials and won't be publicly unveiled until September. But the flying "R" logo provides a preview of what certainly will be one of the outstanding features of the new uniform. Another hint is that the cap is a vibrant red, signaling a return of that color as a dominant feature for the Rockets' work clothes. The uniforms also will have dashes of silver, black and white. Not a scientific survey; for informational purposes only. The best news for longtime Rockets fans is that there are no pinstripes. And the snaggle-toothed, needle-nosed cartoon rocket ship that had adorned the team's uniforms since the 1995-96 season is no more. The signature "R" in the logo, designed by Academy Award-winning costume designer Eiko Ishioka, is configured to resemble a rocket's nose cone at the top and features twin exhaust trails at the bottom. Ishioka's design, McDougall said, attempts to demonstrate the vertical nature of basketball - and of rockets, for that matter. The logo has the blessing of team owner Leslie Alexander, who junked the familiar red and gold colors of the Rockets' longtime uniform in the wake of the team's back-to-back NBA championships in 1993 and 1994.
Man, I design better logos than that. And I just do it part time. How much did they spend on this??? In fact, anyone up for a logo design contest between us fans here on the board? Let us decide and we'll sell it to Les for a cheap $100,000.
All I can say is it must be a slow off-season for us if the new logo news has the server locked up!! Anyway, I like it; simple, good colors and most of all not cartoonish. I agree though, the font could be better.
This might explain why noone was able to see the logo on Badiane's cap on draft night. If someone wears a red cap with this logo on it, it'll be very different to distinguish the logo. It just blends right in with the red cap.
Who calls bull**** on me NOW! My description was correct....................except for the curvy side, that is just tough to explain. In all honesty though, I will say this. I am NOT an "INSIDER." And I am NOT TRYING TO BECOME ONE EITHER. I just happened to have recieved some info on the logo. And like usual, I passed it on, just like I did when I gave you the scoop with Clevelands and Denver's new look. But I have never seen the uniforms and DONT know of any top secret info on any free agents we are about to sign. And if you deciphered my posts like you did for Tim, you would notice that all of my questions were about the Uniforms, NOT THE LOGO. I am just a die hard Rockets fan who had questions about the new look of the team like many here on this board. I just happened to have a little info too. If you want a real insider you all know who to look for, Doc Rocket, Olipere (or however its spelled) DcBaller and maybe even...................Chevious Minnefield, since he claims to be an "insider" And to anyone whom I might have pissed off or let down, atleast I was man enough and had the COJONES or BALLS to tell everyone the TRUTH that I am not an "insider" instead of FOOLING people to believe I was an insider, which I am not to clarify. Hopefully me telling the truth should buy me a little respect on this board. Because if its anything I want to be on this board, it isnt being called an "insider", its being respected. And like always, If I do recieve a little "insider" info in the future, I will post it. And now that the logo hunt is over, I have a few questions for Tim or DcBaller or any insider in the house. 1....................For along time, we have heard rumors abotu the Rockets crafting a "superhero" type logo to put on the front of the jersey, ala U of Miami, NC, Michigan........... Just when you thought that rumor was dead. Now we have ur super hero symbol logo. But is it going to be replacing "Houston" or "Rockets" on the front of the jersey? 2.....................I have heard that the Rockets mainly went with platinum because it could be used to incorporate Eiko's patented "Morphotex" metallic threads. Is this true and will morphotex be used. 3......................What can we expect the home court to look like. Are we going with the normal falt pine or Parque flooring. Are we going for the artsy street paint jobe that Philly and Toronto display or are we going for a "plane-jane" traditonal look that Boston and New York display. I 'm hoping for a light wood colored Parque floor like Rutgers U has and an artsy street paint job to go along with it.
Has anyone seen this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2843258069&category=2998 This guy's selling a hat with the new Rockets logo on it. The pic's not up on the ad, but I emailed the guy and he sent me the pic of the hat. It looks totally legit. I wonder what it will go for?
