true story... i was playing basketball with a couple of teens in the neighborhood. a couple of teens came later not from the neighborhood. they started using the N word while playing basketball. the teens mom happened to walk the dog. she heard everything. and she proceed to give the teens a lecture about how dis-respectful they are and they shouldn't come to play with her sons anymore. i guess my point is, it doesn't matter what your intend is when saying racially offensive words, it can be offensive to your own race. let along if you are not part of the race and using it. doesn't matter if it's meant to be funny or not. i'm sure the teens were pretending to be thuggish and no harm intended. but others don't look at it that way.

Tinman, you were making a good case for China being unreasonable to cut off 10 mins of the film when you brought in this YOF crap. How dumb is it to assume that the guys arguing with you are all YOFs? There is at least one guy in that group who is a known Yao-hater. Labeling your enemies is not a wise thing to do if you do not know them well.

We should take everything to court to decide on intent.

when you google 'chinese pirate' this is the picture you get:

when we buy their goods its ok, but when they copy our goods and we don't see revenue from it, it hurts the US economy. yes movies and software are part of the economy. but thats a whole different topic.

    ok, not YOFers! Sorry.

    How about:

    China
    Having
    Oversensitive
    People
    Seeking
    To
    Increase
    Censorship
    ?
    ;)

Who gets to say what words or ok to say and which are not?

And if there's a fight, and a Chinese person happens to back down, and someone calls him "yellow", is he a racist?

And since "yellow" can be seen as a racist word, does that mean it should be banned? Now, is Webster's racist because it has the word "yellow" in it?

What about Gook? John McCain used this word to describe his captors in Vietnam. Guess what - he gets to run for President.

Point is, people are focusing on words because it's much easier to score political points. But real racism, that is discrimination, will never get dealt with. People have replaced moving forward with civil rights with the PC movement.

    It's so sad.

Exactly, which is why censorship is so insidious. Once you allow someone to start "banning" words, the floodgates open.

In today's word, you don't need to fire someone or tar and feather them for yellling an ethnic slur. It's so distasteful that anyone who uses it loses a level of respect and credibility. Let them make their own bed.

But to effectively censor them is like two wrongs making a right.

It's using intolerance to fight intolerance. No one shoudl try to surmise the intent of what someone said. Now, obviously, if someone says - I hate those (insert slur) (insert race) and wish they'd all go to (insert awful place), they are narrowminded idiots.

But it's not a crime to be a narrowminded idiot. It's not a crime to be stupid or a racist. We should be making fun of them. Not censoring them and turning them into matyrs or worse - destroying our own tolerance for every opinion out there - good or bad.

I'm all for criticising them and calling them out. But censoring and firing and that sort of stuff? That's scary. Saying idiotic things isn't the same as discriminating against someone.

Oh, I don't care what you say about the sensitivity and censorship issue. If you have read my post carefully, I only have problem with you bringing in the YOF craps. I just think it's dumb. Since you have said sorry for it, case closed. Apology accepted. Now you can go ahead to comment more on them being sensitive. It's not like anyone will care. :)

It's because of different forms of censorship that "today's world" is possible. Some people think this censorship is outdated while others definitely don't believe we've collectively reached that level of responsibility.

Wrt the Chinese government's response, are you okay with that because it's their customs and governance?

ROFL, I can't even believe my eyes. NewYorker is talking like he is a forerunner of the movement against racism here. LOL How more hypocritical can he gets? Isn't this the same NewYorker who has casually cracked racist jokes and actually found they are funny? Isn't this the same NewYorker who argued with a passion that there is nothing wrong to call a chinese person a 'chinaman'? Isn't this the same NewYorker who has repeatedly using the 'chink' word in his posts? And now this person is making himself out to be a righteous person against racism here. Do you seriously believe anyone with half a brain would buy this BS from a hypocrite like you, NewYorker?

By your own admittance, you are also a minority. So how did a minority person like you also become a racist, NewYorker? Seriously, do you discriminate against your own race of people? Do you discriminate against your own family? Do you hate yourself? Well, I'd say you do hate yourself based on how you have vehemently denied your true race in different threads before, and then reluntantly admitted it subsequently only when you were against the wall and you ran out of lies to spin the truth.

One more thing, don't even talk about who and who would back down in a fight in your post, NewYorker. You are a well-known coward on this board here. You have repeatedly dodged tough questions in debates because you couldn't man up to admit that you have no answers for them. You have lied time and time again to put the other posters on your imaginary ignore list because you chose to run away rather than confronting them.

NewYorker, you are such a extreme hypocrite that it's almost comical.

There is nothing offensive in this movie toward chinese people.

    1. the chinese actors would not be in the movie if they believe it to be racist
    2. they are suppose to be chinese pirates not chinese fisherman or chinese doctors or chinese basketball players. pirates = thieves/nomads, they aren't suppose to be supermodels
    3. no one this board who was offended by the potrayal of chinese pirates showed me what chinese pirates are suppose to look like (Except for meogwi)
    4. this movie is not a serious movie, its an dumb action adventure about fictious people and squid people.
    5. if they found it offense why is 10minutes shaved off instead of all??

i've given you 5 reasons for the 5 people in the world who were offended.

What different forms of censorship have made the modern world possible?

As for the Chinese gov't response. I don't think they are reflective of the people in all cases. I don't think this is a cultural issue. Geez, you have one of the most revered Chinese actors in the movie - that actually brings esteem to Chinese, not the other way around.

It's not cultural, it's the narrow-minded and blindness on the part of the gov't.

And what's most ironic is this. What does banning it within China acomplish? Nothing. DOes the gov't think that preventing Chinese from seeing something they see as racist would do any good, while the rest of the world will watch it?

Frankly, if I thought something was offensive to me and my values, I'd want everyone who shared my values to see it and be offended along with me. Why would I want to hide it?

What's the purpose of censorship? It isn't to protect. We aren't children in this world. It's to manipulate. It's because a gov't or a group doesn't trust the receiver of the information to judge for themselves.

Anyone who advocates censorship is advocating the idea that people can not be trusted with ideas.

Don't post any where other costars have scars. Although that might be most of the kung fu movies.
