if she actually does that, I take back what I said about her. I still don't think she's funny, but obviously she has no problem using offensive words on everyone. then she shouldn't complain, nor should anyone else defend her when people react to it. freedom of speech is a two way street isn't it? shes allowed to say what she wants to say, the targets of her ridicule should be allowed to react approprioately. like I said before to DM, a white person making fun of black people carries different meaning than a black person making fun of white people. a guy who cheats on his wife and then makes a joke at her liek "you shoulda seen your face when I told you I was banging your sister. HAR HAR" probably wouldn't be the same as the wife saying "damn it felt good to throw your naked ass outside to the curb."
Sorry, I'm your average American. I dont care about the rest of the world. If you don't know the history of blackface, don't go into a discussion about it with me. Did you really just say that you think blackface can be funny? for whom?
thats a really poor example. It is odd that you autmatically discredit, or overly credit, the value of what one says based on color. seems racist to me.
right. you dont care about the rest of the world...but you care what the rest of the world says? why is it black face example...and not white? i dont know. thats pretty insulting.
I don;t really understand your point of the analogy but my feeling is racism is racism and satire is satire.
I have no idea what you're trying to say or imply the discussion is about how white people making racist jokes about black people carries different meanings than the other way around. Blackface is a routine that some white comedians used in the past.
My point is that a black comedia can joke about slavery like Arsenio's joke about there are no black astronauts because no black man wants to say "NASA NASA", but a white comedian who talks about how he would talk to slaves to show he's the master is 2 completely different things. I'm sure even skinheads have comedians. We shouldn't simply say just because it's satire, we shouldn't be offended.
I'm not saying that there's no such thing as offensive comics who can make you laugh. I'm just saying that you shouldn't just assume that every person who labels themselves a Comedian should get a free pass when it comes to jokes that play off stereotypes or prejudices especially given the history of race relations in this country.
Just because you use a racist word it doesn't make the comment itself racist. If I write an article about the history of the word chink, it doesn't make the article racist. The same thing goes for jokes. It's the intent of use of the word that matters, not the use of the word itself.
Is your definition of a free pass someone saying "that person is just trying to make a living and is not an actual racist?"
So what is the intent of a "comedian" who uses a racially offensive word other than to exploit it and further their own career, especially if that "comedian" is not of the same race as the object of their ridicule? You can't just ignore America's track record of race relations, even today.
yeah that's about right. words like bean*rs, sp*cs, ch*nks, n-----, these all have an ugly race relations history (between whites and Hispanics, Chinese, blacks) behind them. I can't give a free pass to a white comedian who exploits the ugly (and in a lot fo cases, deadly) history of these words for a few cheap laughs.
Silverman is not white. She is jewish. So i guess she is OK with you? Just wanted to chop it own and show everyone that you don't really have a problem with anybody trying to make a living in stand up comedy except the white people. I think people can make up their own minds if only having a problem with a person doing something based entirely on their race is racist or not.
I don't think that is her full intent. I don't think that is the intent of such comedic movies as Blazing Saddles and The Jerk also. Racist terms are used in those movies and it is funny as hell. Sometimes you can actually use racist terms in comedy to combat racism. Again, I will point to Lenny Bruce. (also Jewish) "Are there any ******s here tonight? Could you turn on the house lights, please, and could the waiters and waitresses just stop serving, just for a second? And turn off this spot. Now what did he say? "Are there any ******s here tonight?" I know there's one ******, because I see him back there working. Let's see, there's two ******s. And between those two ******s sits a kike. And there's another kike— that's two kikes and three ******s. And there's a spic. Right? Hmm? There's another spic. Ooh, there's a wop; there's a polack; and, oh, a couple of greaseballs. And there's three lace-curtain Irish micks. And there's one, hip, thick, hunky, funky, boogie. Boogie boogie. Mm-hmm. I got three kikes here, do I hear five kikes? I got five kikes, do I hear six spics, I got six spics, do I hear seven ******s? I got seven ******s. Sold American. I pass with seven ******s, six spics, five micks, four kikes, three guineas, and one wop. Well, I was just trying to make a point, and that is that it's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness. Dig: if President Kennedy would just go on television, and say, "I would like to introduce you to all the ******s in my cabinet," and if he'd just say "****** ****** ****** ****** ******" to every ****** he saw, "boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie," "****** ****** ****** ****** ******" 'til ****** didn't mean anything anymore, then you could never make some six-year-old black kid cry because somebody called him a ****** at school It's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness." thanks, you are the ONLY person who gave me an answer for this. Because Chow Yun fat is bald and has a mustache? how is that inaccurate? are there no bald chinese pirates? all you YOFers have failed to show me what "ACCURATE" portrayal of a PIRATE was in that day. This is even DUMBER than Iran being ticked at 300 the movie. first of all, there were no ninjas in Persia. At least that movie was based on a historical event. This stupid movie is PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN!! if you guys can't see the stupidity of this censorship (why only 10minutes ? why not delete ALL OF CHOW YUN FAT's performance?), then you are clanging free throws like leBron. Tell me YOFers, was Harold and Kumar banned?
Just in terms of this point alone, I have to agree with tinman. I'll watch the movie eventualy, but I can't see any reason why a pirate would be offensive to you. Maybe they think it's cause you're making this a gov't control topic. In which case, I advise you guys to head over to the Tianenmen Square thread
nope, she's still not ok with me and she still doesn't get a free pass. She exploits the ugly and sometimes deadly history of those words for her own career. If she wants to crack Jewish jokes or political jokes, I'm fine, but when she uses those words in the manner that she used them anymore than a white comedian does when you consider the problems we've had with race relations in this country.
