It does come in spurts but his seasons have been fairly consistent. I mean he should be a 3 time pro-bowler already..got snubbed his second year yet won the NFL defensive linemen of the year award. He was on his way to another pro-bowl this season even with a nagging injury. Isn't he like top 3 in sacks since his entrance into the NFL?
Once you switch to a 3-4, you have to apply the philosophy of The Tuna. "You can never have enough linebackers." Which the texans already do with TEs.
This whole thing is a big pat on Wade Phillips back... How could the defense not improve next season? You will have Demeco Ryans back and you will replace at least 1/2 the secondary. Just getting a cover corner and a cover safety will greatly improve the defense.
Excessively premature to expect that. A blown Achilles is no sure thing to come back from, even worse odds to get back 100%. Until he proves it wrong, we should also expect Ryans to be like Dunta Robinson (two years back) or Owen Daniels (last year) when they first returned from major injury.
At least it happened relatively early in the season, giving Ryans an extended period of time to rehab.
Look, I know we are all upset at Kubiak, but Phillips is a very good DC.... And the team needs one... DD
Of course, I agree, I think most Cowboy fans would concur. It was a similar situation in Dallas. Many fans felt that the Wade Phillips ship was heading nowhere. For some odd reason, the fans seem ahead of the ownership on these matters. The owners are too close to the situation, too emotionally involved. I think there is a chance that the Texans will actually improve through personnel changes, but the culture of underperforming, unmotivated, clock punchers will continue. They need to keep those "loser" scripts for after games. They have those down. Passing on some of the premier coaches available now is a HUGE mistake. Good ole boy networks destroy organizations.
mcclain twitter: Sigh. I'm not too upset about Wade as a DC, but at least cover your bases and interview a few guys, Bob!
I am happy with the Wade hiring. I would have been unhappy with the Texans taking a flier on a LB or DL coach as a first time coordinator. No more of that. Wade was the best DC available who has had experience and proven results. I can't think of anyone else that was available that had his pedigree.
Agreed. I'm completely unhappy that we're keeping Kubiak and not even chasing Cowher when he's a possibility. But. Since we did keep him, hiring someone like Wade should be seen as a positive. The only thing I'm worried about is if it fails, does Wade get the leg up on being our head coach? Yikes.. that, I don't want.
I've heard that contrary to reports, both Cowher and Chucky may wait another year before seriously considering job offers. I assume those two are the premium coaches you speak of.
don't we all know this is where this is going? honestly, i think the odds are pretty high that wade phillips is the next head coach of the houston texans.
I think your right unless the defense completely fails again next year after bringing in Wade, signing an impact FAgent and going defense heavy in the draft. If the defense holds up its end of the bargain and the offense struggles then Wade will probably take over for Kubes.
I feel like their is about a 90% chance of that happening. It would make for a great "story" ... Wade tries to extend the Phillips legacy in Houston 30 years later. One more .500 or worse season, or a rough patch to start a season, and I think Mcnair will be more inclined to pull the plug on Kubiak and give Wade the reigns. Or, best case scenario, it might actually work out to where we win plenty of regular season games and become the Chargers -- a great team by the numbers but not enough brains at HC and overall toughness to win in the playoffs. I could see Mcnair sticking with them for 5 more years if they make the playoffs within the next two, but ultimately our championship potential is very small.
