LOL. I meant his personality. I don't think most of us care what these guys are like just so long as they're successful. But Wade seems like a genuinely fun guy to have around.
Yea I must have been in a coma or something. I found, it tho: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA2oEW5eMUQ.
Max, ever see Scary Movie 4? At the end there's a scene with the twin dummies from the movie Saw. One of the dummies comes in after having fooled around with the black chick. The other dummy confronts him by saying: "Tell me you didn't have sex with her." The first dummy replies: "It's OK, she told me she was a virgin!". The other dummy puts his face in his hands and declares "We are so F**KED!!!". That about sums up my feelings about the Texans.
Wade is one of the nicest guys around. He's the type of guy you'd want to be your next door neighbor but as a football coach, he's a total disaster. He's 63 years old and looks more and more lost out there. I honestly believe that the game has begun to pass him by. He was fired from the Cowboys because their defense - HIS defense - had crashed and burned and Wade had no earthly clue on how to fix it. The same thing is going to happen here but you're probably right, the Houston fans will find his confused "teddy bear look" endearing.
Uh oh. Just heard a really disturbing soundbyte from tio Mcnair. on wade- " He looked at the film and right away was able to see what we were doing wrong and came up with ways on how to fix without changing personnel". I'm paraphrasing a little, but the last line was what stood out.."without changing personnel." Knowing the history of our local team, I'm scared he meant, I don't want to acquire good veterans, they cost a lot.
I think that might be taken out of context. What Wade is probably saying is that he could have done something more successful (scheme, players playing out of position, etc) with what they currently have. I don't think it was meant that they shouldn't look to improve talent.
To be fair, HIS defense ranked 9th, 8th and 9th in the three full years prior. I don't know if that qualifies as a "disaster." I do not follow the Cowboys, so I can't comment as to what happened this year - but I do know expectations were REALLY high there and sometimes things can snowball when the train runs off the track, especially in that toxic environment. Dallas is a cesspool of misappropriated indignation. I hate Dallas. I take nothing that happens there seriously. It's the worst place on Earth.
McNair needs to just stop talking. He's not going to convince anyone, and he's just pissing people off any more. The decision is made - good or bad. He just needs to disappear in a hole for a while and let things blow over.
I'm with Ric though in that I think Wade is a good DC. In fact, I'd prefer him as head coach calling D with Gary as OC than the other way around. He is an above average coach in this league. I have no problems with him being here. My issue is that the head coach problem still exists, the personnel problem still exists (lol at them blaming the DC, and secondary coaches for personnel moves.) I am furious with the way this organization has danced around reality this offseason. I mean, by the comments made by this org, Rick Smith has zero input. The DC and secondary coaches got to pick players and make decisions on veterans and Gary does it with offense. What the heck does Rick Smith do Bob? Only this organization would say that the accountable parties for all the problems have been dealt with when you fire the DC and secondary coaches. The personnel sucks but the GM doesn't make personnel decisions guyz!
That makes him no better than the millions of people who watch these games. -Hey cover 2 won't work, there's gonna be more than 2 guys going deep. -Hey it's a goal line situation. Maybe want to play tighter off the LOS.
A question aimed not specifically at emjohn but generally at this prevailing sentiment. Pretty much everyone is blood-boiling irate right now. Is it that the org. kept Kubiak, or is it moreso that Bill freaking Cowher was right there for the taking and we kept the King-of-Five-and-Seven?
Somebody posted in another thread that Wade's defenses are known for an all or nothing kind of philosophy. We're going to bring the house and leave our DB's on an island. I haven't watched enough cowboy games to see for myself, but that just doesn't sound like the kind of defense we should be running with our current set of DB's...
I'm equally disappointed that Kubiak and Smith were retained. As for Cowher, I'm not sure he was ever "right there for the taking", we may never know how close or far we were.
This is sort of where I am too. It's not necessarily the individual decisions that I think are bad - like you said, Wade Phillips is pretty decent. It's the lack of any sort of functional governing philosophy. This just seems like an organization that has no clue what its doing. Even if you love Wade Phillips, he's not going anywhere in the next 3 days. There was no rush to lock him up. Interview some other people. At least see what is out there - maybe you'll be surprised. It's as though the organization is just being run out of a sense of fear. Scared of losing Kubiak. Scared of not having a DC for a few days. Scared of major changes. Just all around fearful.
I get the feeling that contact with Wade began sometime after the Ravens game. It's just too convenient, too quick. Something had to have taken place already.
