stop and think about this for a second. a 3 year deal.

do you honestly believe they'll make a change at head coach that is NOT him? think mcnair will let wade walk and just eat the contract? no. way. in. hell.

Bob McNair is completely out of touch with reality if he thinks promoting Wade Phillips to HC would be "feel good" in any sense of the word to Texans fans. I'm beginning to think he doesn't have people around him that are worth a dime enough to keep him grounded.

Maybe I'm unique, by my affection for what Bum did in the past with the Oilers has ZERO translation to Wade.

This is a HUGE HUGE HUGE problem for this organization. They need a chief...a president...a someone other than the head coach...who has Bob's ear and can look at things objectively. That would typically be a GM...but this particular GM was hired by the coach...sooooo...there's that.

Charlie P likes to say Bum Phillips is the most beloved sports icon in this town, but is that really true for anyone?

Nothing he says carries any weight with me at all, but I admit to not being a raised a die hard Oilers fan. But even for those I know who are, I've never heard anyone say he should be consulted on anything, given a job with the organization, etc. Not the way I hear those things about Hakeem (who I have major man love for) or Nolan Ryan (ditto). I just don't see with Bum. People like him sure, but nobody seems to desire him to have any sort of role with the organization.

You aren't unique. It was a great time, but it was a long time ago.

I honestly think Bob is so out of touch that he thinks we still care about it. It's almost as if he's thinks it's still 2002 and we're all just happy to have a team, a stadium to tailgate at, players who stay out of trouble, and a couple of hometown coaches. As far as a winning team goes.....well, if we have one, great. If not, well, we still have a team, a nice stadium, players who stay out of trouble off the field, and a hometown coach to feel good about.

I think it's a generational thing, I hear stories about the Luv Ya Blue days and the those teams but honestly I can't relate like I can with Hakeem and Clyde. I'm not sure how many Texan fans are old Oiler fans?

Do you realize how old Bum is? The dude is in his late 80's. There's no way he is up for a day-to-day job with any organization. He's a Texans "Ambassador" and is honored regularly, as he should be.

Besides that, the NFL has changed a great deal since he was a coach. There's a reason why old school guys like Ditka, Gibbs, etc. didn't work out in this era.

I wasn't alive in the 70's (though I know plenty of history on Bum's Oilers), but I wouldn't be surprised if people that were tuned in during that time would rank those teams above the Rockets championships. I know it sounds crazy, but this is a football town and those were championship teams that just couldn't get past one of the greatest teams of all time.

You know who McNair is? (Puts on nerd hat) George Lucas. See if this sounds familiar: A long time ago, Lucas did something we all universally loved: Star Wars. Then he started to lose sight of his priorities. He claimed ownership of something that really belonged to us and he began tinkering with it, surrounded by yes-men. At first, the changes, while abominable, were tolerable, minor in the grand scheme of things. We were all still basking in the glow of seeing the films in theaters again, etc. The changes then led to new films; which, initially, was great news. Who wasn’t excited to see a new Star Wars film? Then 1999 came and… Hey, you know what? Maybe they’ll course-correct and get it right with Episode II… Or not.

By 2005, after the release of a third terrible prequel, Lucas had vanquished all good will with us and had systematically ruined what we all once loved. It was time for him to go away.

But he didn’t. Oh, no. He moved on to Raiders of the Lost Ark………..

We all talked ourselves into a fourth Indiana Jones film because, while the special editions and prequels had been unmitigated disasters, hey, at least Spielberg is on board to balance out Lucas’ creative r****dery –what’s that? You’re going to call it Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, make it about aliens, have gigantic, man-eating ants and a magical refrigerator …?...

I think that’s where I am right now. Wade Phillips is my Steven Spielberg. I can talk myself into Wade Phillips; it makes sense on paper. We’re undoubtedly a better team because of the move but – long term, do we really want to hand the franchise over the Shia LaBeouf? Is that the best course of action?

Wade Phillips is my Shia LaBeouf. But I love the analogy.

I feel that this move is good on paper and a Bob McNair move, not a Kubiak move...However, if you think of it, of course Wade is next in line...i'm not sure what to say about that...he has a way of getting guys to play for him in the beginning but over time not so much...I think he's a great DC, but a terrible HC...just like Pubes...

McNair on hiring Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator: "I've never been so confident about our coaching staff as I am now." "Generally, when you make any kind of change... you say, 'Boy, I hope this works out.' I'm not saying that here. It will work out."

Also, anyone hear what Wade did when he got the job? Called Bum in Goliad and said "Daddy, we're now Texans!"

How would Bob McNair know anything about making change?

I'll say this: I *really* like Wade Phillips personally (having never met him). I'll always remember him showing up late for the press conference to announce his firing in Denver: (paraphrasing) "Sorry I'm late but what are they gonna do: Fire me?" I also loved his comment about the Texans' interest, something to the effect of: They're interested and I need a job.

Assuming he turns the defense around - and remains a coordinator - I think fans are going to *really* like him.

"In order for them to win this football game, they're going to need to score more points than their opponent."

I think Texan fans would probably think Satan was an OK guy if he could give them a playoff berth at this point.

Cool. Too many "dazed and confused" or "duh look" closeups on Fox or CBS are sure to be a big turn-off, though.
