I'm not even sure we know how long the durations of the contract offered was. Don't be so harsh on Wafer without knowing the facts. If it was a 1 year deal, then yes, he is out of his mind. If it was a 2 year deal, no one should expect him to accept that offer as he certainly is worth at least $2 million a year given his production and spark off the bench. There are so many scrubs getting paid much more than $2 million for sucking it up so no should expect Wafer to accept a $3.5 million deal for 2 years. Don't be so quick to judge him, NO ONE even thought that he could provide as much as he did for the Rockets during the season. He may not be the brightest of the bunch but he's young and provides offensive punch off the bench who is worth at least $2 million and possibly more.
Frankly, I don't think the Rockets are seriously trying to bring Wafer back. Not that he's no good, they just have other needs to use the MLE on. Morey have also alays talked about how they "won't be begrudge" Von for trying to make the most money. So, it's probable that all that the Rockets offerred was $1.75 mil per year for 2 years (saving the rest of the MLE to use on a big guy), and Wafer can probably find a better deal out there.
I am not sure if any other nba team will give him 2m a year... He has played in nba for several year in several teams and only get some minutes in rockets. But he can try to play in europe or china for money...
A team WILL offer Wafer 2M or more. Quote me. If not, I'll never post here again. I love reading posters on this board dole out their cooky trade scenarios where the other teams get the shaft, or chime in situations like these where they say, give him a 2 year deal with the 2nd year being a team option, or, no team will offer him 2M a year. Or he should be thrilled that we're even offering him anything. 3.5 over 2 years is a low ball offer no matter how you slice it considering he's shown he can shoot the 3 and score in bunches. I'm not saying we should or anybody should break the bank for him, but go look at other team's rosters, ESPN trade machine or RealGM trade checker and find me two players who make 2M a year that you'd have over Wafer. Doesn't Barry make more then 3.5M over 2 years? ..and he's useless
Several teams need a starting C. So he might be overpaid. If the market isn't there for him. I'd guess whatever Turiaf got.
Gortat will get the MLE but no way he gets 10M a year. Whoever needs bench help will throw half (at most) or just under it for a guy like Wafer.
Gortat seems to be the real deal in what the rockets would be looking for in a center. First, he's a great rebounder and shot blocker. He boxes out and is strong enough to hold position on his boards. And when he blocks shots he doesn't rely on athleticism like dwight but just goes straight up with his arms and gets in the way of other center's shots. Second, he's got a good sense of fundamentals and a decent offensive game. He sets picks all over the place, boxes out, will go for that loose ball and will come out and shoot a decent midrange shot. Sure he's not gonna get you 20 points per game but how many people who are MLE players do that anyways. Third, he seems like he's a system guy and to be honest, he really reminds me of the vlade/miller type center that rick likes to facilitate the offense. I think all these pros are more than enough to prove that Gortat deserves the entire MLE. Other centers with his similar skills are making almost twice as much (im looking at you nene, kaman, dalembert, camby, beidrins, bogut, curry, chandler, dampier, big Z and sheed). So if morey can get this guy for the MLE, that's a SOLID acquisition.
Gortat will get the MLE...no more. He showed up well this past season but no one had a clue about him until the playoffs. It would take a severely dumb and desperate GM to give him more (unfortunately, the NBA has several). I actually am interested to see how hard we make a push for Wafer, it should give a pretty strong parallel representation of how White is coming along this summer.
Brandon Roy- $3 million Rudy Fernandez- $1 million Al Thornton- $1.7 million Eric Gordon- $2.6 million Rudy Gay- $2.5 million Courtney Lee- $1.1 million Thaddeus Young- $1.9 million Ronnie Brewer- $1.8 million Nick Young- $ 1.6 million Just to name a few......... Sure, majority if not all these guys are on their original rookie contracts and are sure to get paid one day but do we really want to overpay for Wafer when we have 2 rookies and James White who could likely fill Wafer's role at a fraction of the cost? Stupid teams with dumbass GM's screw themselves by overpaying for players like Wafer after being a 1 year wonder. Inversely, teams get good by stockpiling young talented players on cheap contracts like the above and then paying fair market value for them when the time is right. The time is not right to sign Wafer and it surely will never be right to offer him more than $ 2 million. Not for us at least. No way no how. Not when we can sign Buddinger and or JT who would each gladly take $750K and are equal or greater prospects in comparison to Wafer. I like Wafer a lot but seriously he's NOT all that. He's just another brick in the wall that can easily be replaced.
I know I'm late to the party, but damn, Wafer is an idiot. Good riddance. If he gets some sense and settles for less with Cleveland, that would be a good fit.
That list of players, no comparison. They're on their rookie contracts. Sure, we could use the rookies as a stop gap for Wafer, but look how much we paid for those picks, and then you gotta sign them. ...which is almost basically what you'd pay Wafer. Look, because of the Yao news, Morey wants to use that money to fill that hole as he should, but if Yao was healthy, it's ridiculous to think we shouldn't offer Wafer 2M to resign
All of you guys callimg Wafer an idiot are r****ds. Whats so wrong with a player trying to get most money possible? If he then have to settle for less money because of it then you can call him an idiot.
...now find some that aren't on rookie scale contracts. Probably every player on that list would get atleast a mid-level if they were free agents this year. Either way, I don't think the amount of money per year was nearly as important to Wafer as the length of the contract. I think he'd want a 4 year deal similar to the one C.J. Miles got as opposed to a one year deal. He DOES NOT want to be a free agent next year.
Is there anyway we can get Gay? I mean not with each other I mean like bring him here so we can get Gay with our group of guys. Hmm on second thought we just got rid of Head so maybe Gay wouldn't be the best way to go. LOL
The board is what is. When people don't resign, they're idiots. When we lose one game, it's a blame game calling for somebody's head, the sky is falling. Offseason = trade scenarios where we get Amare and Hinrich at the same time. Where we get Rubio offering Landry + change + future considerations. Brooks and Shane for 2 + Gay? How does Memphis turn that down... Etc When there's an injury, it's kill the medical staff, we're doomed (this Yao news is more severe and troublesome, granted) Wafer is not worth 2M ..lol
