Is he even PG material at all? When you have Yao, T-Mac, and Artest, how is it that Brooks led the team in shots attempted with 17? Lets face it. The only reason people even want to call Aaron Brooks a PG is because he's 6 foot tall. If he was 6'4"-5", people wouldn't even hesitate to call him a SG. He's just another SG in a PG's body. If you ask me, he's basically a Mike James that is more disciplined and actually tries hard. It seems many people don't really know what a PG is and what the ideal PG should do in this offense. Just because AB can shoot, penetrate and dish, that doesn't make him a PG. Hello? T-Mac does the same thing. Now, unless you want to tell me that the "T-Mac point forward guy" was right the whole time, I think there's more to being a PG than just shooting, driving, and passing. Hopefully everybody saw this last night. Fact of the matter is nobody on this team runs the offense better than Alston. He gives us much needed defense at a position where otherwise we have zero defensive presence. He is a true leadership presence for us ON the court. Like Battier, he is a glue player that helps the team gel. There is a reason why all the players, coaches, and Morey think of him in high regard. Is he the "ideal" PG for this offense? No, because he's not a reliable shooter. But I can safely say he's the best damn option we have on this roster right now. There's a reason why Rafer doesn't take a lot of shots, and it's not just because he sucks at shooting. The starting PG of this team has no business taking more than 10+ shots a game with our Big Three playing. But back to AB, I'm not going to bash him for taking all these shots. It's not his fault we don't have a single true backup PG on the roster that can help out Rafer, the only REAL PG on the team. Brooks is a great player to have off the bench, with his instant offense. We should WANT him to shoot, not worry about PG duties. But when he's asked to start, then you have problems since the Big Three is supposed to be taking the shots. There's a total lack of chemistry with Brooks starting, and it's not a coincidence that our 75 point effort was by far our worst offensive performance of the season. And before you consider the Spurs to be some great defensive team this season, you should know that they are giving up 95 points a game even after this game. Once everybody comes back from injuries/suspensions, and T-Mac/Yao get healthy, all these problems will be water under the bridge. This isn't the BCS. We don't have to win every game, and we don't have to be the #1 seed. I have plenty of confidence to win on the road when we're healthy and gelling. The point of this thread is to show that Brooks is not some magical answer at PG, and Rafer Alston is indeed a big time asset to the team, regardless of what some people here would tell you.
Yeah, we know. Just let's hold judgement on AB as a starter for more than one game. Knee....meet....Jerk. DD
Look for all the criticism that Rafer Alston gets for his FG %, he is still our point guard. He knows how to set up the players in their sets. You saw it in the playoffs without Alston, we were below average.
