They can overtake Taiwan through attrition, but at what cost?

Any non-peaceful means of unification will spell an intense arms race in the region that overshadows what's being currently talked about. China can try that and close its borders to capitalist influences, but they require free shipping lanes and trading channels to import resources that satisfies their domestic population.

I'm all for bolstering our current alliances and improving their capabilities while coordinating intelligence and resource sharing. I don't think we are internally stable enough to fight a conflict with China alone when we distrust the motives of parties in power or even minorities. It's possible that America rallies, but the war effort would definitely be much different as China is embedded with our spending habits and way of life.

Deeply splitting the global supply chain will cause a lot of shortages while our industries scramble in its wake.

It's a lose lose situation for both powers.

The F-22 also collided with current events, as the economic demands of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the lack of a peer adversary made a $300 million fighter plane, in the view of government officials at the time, an unsustainable cost. An economic recession—nearly a depression—that began in 2008 and only ended in 2010 was clearly another reason.

That's almost the cost of 3 F-35s...1 for each variant.

F-35s aren't made for being the best dog fighter but it does help augment other fighters for group air superiority.

It was cheaper than the f-35 and was cancelled at a time everything was being stimulated for jobs n stuff. It was a dumb move that is currently screwing us.

Bush wanted to kill it way back in 2006. Please do a little research. The plane sucked. It was only operational about 60% of the time. The DoD wanted to kill it for years. It finally got killed under Obama.

The plane certainly doesn;t suck which is foolish to say but where do you see Bush was speaking out against continuing production in 2006?

What’s awesome is my kid leaves for boot camp in July on an aircrew contract with the Navy because he wants to eventually be a pilot. But mostly he wants to serve. He’d tell you he wants to fly an F35 but wow the competition for that will be insane.

Thanks for pointing out that it's an opinion piece. Members ought to remember to add that important bit of information to a post. Even more important to add it to a thread. Any thread down here, but particularly one like this, in my opinion.

If they had actually made the over 700 F-22's they intended to build, the cost per fighter would have dropped considerably, in my opinion. Those aircraft in that number would have produced some sober thinking in the CCP's military. Even more if we'd picked the F-23, instead (that's another story, and opinion!).

I said under Bush. Rumsfeld cut procurement to 183 of them. The Bush DoD was actively arguing against them. They are great when they are available. They aren't available due to mechanical issues, over 60% of the time. Therefore they suck. I don't care how awesome something is if it is unusable 60% of the time.

Because he wants to be the best pilot while actually being in a plane.
