I understand the thought process now.
    This is good. Profit = Sale price - Cost = $9 - $8 = $1.
This has not completed the transaction yet, all he did was buy, the only piece of info you have at this time is his cost, $10. You can not figure his profit or loss yet
    This completed the transaction.
    Profit = Sale price - Cost = $11 - $10 = $1.

He made 2 transactions, received $1 profit for each, total $2.

    Another riddle for you.

3 guys needed to stay in a hotel room and decided to share the cost. The cashier said the total was $26. Each guy gave $10. The cashier said he didnt have change at the moment and would send the $4 change up with the bell hop later.

An hour later the bellhop came with the $4 change. The three guys each took $1 and gave the bell hop a $1 tip. So now they each of the three spent $9 to make $27 + $1 tip which makes a total of $28.

If there room was only $26 + $1 tip =$27

What happend to the extra dollar?

    The $9/each & $27/total includes the tip. $28 doesn't figure into it.

    There is no extra dollar.

Unless they're using it to do lines with a stripper on the mirrored closet door which has been pulled off it's tracks & is now laying on a bed, while one of your buddies plays scrabble with another stripper on the other bed. Which is a pretty good way to spend a Thursday afternoon in Denver.

this is less a riddle than a deception.
guys spend 27 total for room and tip, not 28. the extra dollar for tip doesn't add on to the 27, it is included. saying the total is 28 means that 2 of the guys spent 9, and one spent 10. that isn't true; they all spent 9 dollars.

This one always takes me a while to figure out.

    The bellhop essentially gives each guy $1.33 in change ($4/3), so they've each spent $8.67. They each give him $0.33 ($0.33 x 3 = $1), so they've each spent $9. $27 altogether.

on the first riddle, i think the answer is zero. it depends on how you look at the problem, if you think that two transactions are continuous, then the profit is Zero. If you treat two incidents as separate, then the profit is Two dollars.

on riddle number two, there is nothing wrong with the rule of addition or multiplication, however, the logic in the problem itself is wrong. there is no missing dollar. a more important question should be why is there an extra dollar? well, the dollar tip in that calculation is included twice.

You're exactly right about the deception. 28 has nothing to do with equation, it is thrown in as a sleight of hand.

26 for the room plus 1 dollar tip = 27. The 3 guys spended 9 dollars each.

how does it make a difference if the transactions are continuous or separate, if you're still looking at the guy's profit by the end of the day. and how do you get 0 under ANY scenario?

You didn't state this problem right - the 3 guys actually have to pay $25 instead of $26. Read this link:

i say the chicken dealer broke even, making nothing

he had to spend 8 dollars, he made a dollar on the first sale when he sold it for 9 dollars...

he lost a dollar when he paid 10 dollars for the bird the second time...

he made a dollar on the second sale when he sold it for 11 dollars

the answer is he made zero profit

    Poorly put together riddle.

They each spent $8.666666667 (etc.) on the room, and each spent $.333333 (etc.) on the tip, for a total of $27. The $27 includes the tip (not $27 + $1) Its $26 + $1 with each getting $1 back.
