I think Morey has put together a good team, but he's traded away too much value to get the team where it is right now. Just look at all the good players around the league that we could have kept: Rudy Gay, Martin, Lowry, Lamb, Morris, Patterson...that's 6 man rotation right there.

I'm just kidding. But remember when people used to make this type of argument? It's not just that Morey has consistently drafted talent, he's also done a great job of properly assessing value after the draft and selling high. So far, none of the guys Morey has traded away have come back to haunt us. Gay is the only one you can make an argument for so far but not as much now as before.

Objection, your honor. Yao's career officially ended in 2011, but it ended for all practical purposes -- including Morey's rebuild project -- in 2009. So, it's been 4 years, not 2. I think the sugar-coating undermines the argument. Otherwise, good post.

Lets be honest he got very lucky too. If not for stern he would have got Nene and Gasol. OKC's owners might have decided to be not cheap. If either of those don't happen Morey doesn't get harden and with no harden no howard.

He deserves a lot of credit for keeping the payroll flexible and always rotating his assets.

By this same logic if the Spurs tanked 1 year later they would have been built around Michael Olowokandi for the past decade and a half. If Portland picked Durant then OKC would probably be on their way to West Virginia by now. If Pat Riley wasn't Pat Riley then the Big 3 wouldn't exist. And if my grandmother had balls, I wouldn't be typing here and now.

I think this is an underrated aspect of what the organization has managed to do. How many other teams have as many rotational players that actually spent more than a few weeks in the D-League? We've actually used the D-League to do just that, develop players. The result has been Beverly, Smith, and PPAt all developing into rotational players. A lot of NBA rosters use valuable cap space offering $3-4 million to guys that will never crack the starting rotation. While none of those guys are world beaters, getting even a little production out of them has been incredibly valuable to us.

This is great, but it is more about a change in how analytics are perceived.

I also think Morey is more the key than the minions around him.

Your wrong. It started in 2011, one could even claim that it did not truely start until 2012. Here is a chronological break down.

NBA Play-offs 2009 the Rockets defeated the Portland Trailblazers in the 1st round of the play-offs and took the Lakers to 7 games before losing in round two. There was no effort to rebuild that summer, none. Yao had a stress fracture in his foot but the Rockets were still committed to building around Yao after he recovered.

July 2010 Daryl tries to recruit Bosh to team with Yao, which was his whole sales pitch. Team with Yao and form the best front court in Basketball. Rockets were still trying to build around Yao in summer of 2010 so that clearly was not a rebuilding year.

July 2011 Yao Ming retires after another stress fracture in his foot. After the Rockets had limited Yao to 24 minutes a game, another stress fracture was discovered in his foot on December 16, 2010 which effectively ended his career. Up to that point the Rockets had made no moves to try and rebuild the team. None.

    Strike!

    Rebuild Starts Here:

Dec 2011 the Rockets agree to a trade for Pau Gasol and had another deal on the table for Nene once that deal was complete. Kevin Martin would have ended up in New Orleans along with Luis Scola. Of course we all know that David Stern vetoed that trade for Basketball Reasons. That December was Daryl’s 1st attempt to rebuild after Yao.

February 2012 the Rockets attempt to trade for D12 at the trade deadline but D12 did not want to come to Houston so he optioned into the last year of his contract which was 2012/2013 season. This was the Rockets 2nd attempt at a rebuild during mid season.

July 2012 Daryl Morey once again tries to trade for D12 after Orlando decides they will not be able to resign him in 2013 and do not want another season surrounded by the Dwight Drama. Of course we all know Dwight ends up in LA. Regardless, Daryl trades away almost every single asset from the team that had any value outside of Kevin Martin. This is where the rebuild actually started to be honest. Lowry, Scola, Lee, Hayes, Dragic, were all major contributors if not starters. The only significant players left on the team were Kevin Martin, Patrick Patterson and Chandler Parsons. The Rockets sign restricted free agents Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin. The Rockets were in full blown rebuild mode.

October 28, 2012 the Rockets trade Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and picks for James Harden.

July 2013 the Rockets sign free agent Dwight Howard.

So as you can see the rebuild did not start in 2009 like you claim. It started with several failed attempts starting in December 2011 when they tried to trade half of their core players away for Pau Gasol.

I guess I will just keep repeating this.

    Luck = Preperation meets opertunity.

    Daryl Morey was very prepared.
