Check the farmers in this video: http://www.wimp.com/solutionoil/ (Sorry if this has been posted. I tried to search for it. I posted it in another thread, but it seemed too "serious" for that one.) EDIT: Here's the YouTube version: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YQuk68SjyEY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YQuk68SjyEY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Well then the petrochemical corporations wouldn't be able to make all the money off the chemical dispersants they are using now. The government should be all over this idea asap.
Looks promising... in a bowl. I'd like to see a bigger test sample, but would be awesome if bubbaco could outdo the failures we're seeing so far. Gotta wonder if they're glossing over cleanup, but seems like it might slow this thing down if nothing else.
Is there a catch to this? I find it hard to believe that no one's figured this out before. What are we paying all the top scientists for?
There are some obvious questions: Is it scalable? How would the hay behave in seawater (50,000ppm salt)? What about all the livestock for whom the hay is intended? However, surely this is worth a look. I mean, at the very least, dumping bales along the beaches seems practical enough, right?
How about a giant shamwow to blanket the entire Gulf? This idea seems practical in a small isolated lake or such... but come on. The gulf is pretty damn large...
What a great idea........this is the kind of creative thinking that built this country. Come on Obama.....make it happen. DD
It probably won't work. You will need a lot of hay and how to you plan to take all the hay out? http://senseofevents.blogspot.com/2010/05/hay-for-oil-spill-is-no-plan.html
Yeah, I never thought the "solution" to be scalable. However, there's still no reason something like this couldn't be used along beaches, for example. You're dealing with trucks and trailers -- not barges -- at that point.
First, I don't think these poor guys understand the scale of the slick or something. I would think the amount of hay needed to combat this would be astronomical. Add to that this is pretty much pointless unless they can cap the leak. Over 200,000 barrels of oil are being pumped out daily.
This. I mean, you can see the oil slick from space. Got enough hay that you can see it from space? It's just a farmer looking for someone to buy his product.
Anybody else see this segment on oil spill solutions (with about 5 other ideas)? <object width="420" height="245" id="msnbc43462"><param name="movie" value="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=10,0,0,0"><param name="FlashVars" value="launch=37159380&width=420&height=245"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="wmode" value="opaque" /><embed name="msnbc43462" src="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32545640" width="420" height="245" FlashVars="launch=37159380&width=420&height=245" allowscriptaccess="always" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="opaque" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object><p style="font-size:11px; font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: #999; margin-top: 5px; background: transparent; text-align: center; width: 420px;">Visit msnbc.com for <a style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com">breaking news</a>, <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032507" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">world news</a>, and <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032072" style="text-decoration:none !important; border-bottom: 1px dotted #999 !important; font-weight:normal !important; height: 13px; color:#5799DB !important;">news about the economy</a></p> Sounds like no one is taking responsibility or it's all about awarding contracts to the "right" people/companies.
isnt this already being done in a way? I saw a report of salons and barbershops who were collecting all their hair and donating it to build these large hair nets...don't remember the exact name or process for doing it, but the idea was hair absorbs oil...
