It is a matter of perspective. If we want to be a solid playoff team and occasionally make a small run in the west, then our PG situation is fine. If we are trying to win championships, we have a problem at PG. Yes, backup swingman is also a need.
Good breakdown comparison of assists - it's easy to see how the best way to beat the Hornets (and we did on their home court) is take away his easy transition buckets and clog up his passing lanes. alethios
Great comment... I'd be happy if the Rox made a trade for an improved backup PG, but to suggest that we are in a hopeless situation because of our PGs is a stretch. For those that comment about the "third" star, Scolandry is at least as good as Ray Allen in this point of his career.
I'd love it if we can get Crittenton, Rodriguez as backup PG. If you equate scolandry to ray allen then who are you going to equate rondo and perkins to? rondo would be part of our big 3 if he was with the Rockets right now, and its interesting to note he is the Celtics' 4th option.
IMO, Rondo is only marginally better than Alston. And I think that Battier's defense and three point shooting make up for Perkins - and if not - throw in Deke
Under normal circumstances, I'd vote for staying far away from Marbury. However, if the Knickerbockers buy him out and if we can get him for the veterans minimum, I would be for it. Under the minimum, if he became a problem, we could just boot him off the team. The cost would be $1M to $2M and the 15th roster spot. Nonetheless, Marbury would be playing for his reputation and a new contract so we might benefit spectacularly. Afterall, he is a great scorer and his assist/turnover ratio is above average.
This is ridiculous, yall really think rafer is that bad? at first i thought this was a thread from a year ago that someone brought back up... but yall are serious about not wanting rafer. If he hadn't gone down, we would have been in the western conference finals. The Jazz series would have been completely different, we wouldnt have lost the first two games at home, and it would have played out much differently. As far as the lakers, shane battier completely shuts down kobe and we definately had the lakers number this whole season. But back to the topic rafer alston (as for a point guard) is an above average three point shooter, above average for not turning the ball over, average passer, above average ball handler, above average defender and a solid starter for any team in the NBA. He is no Chauncey Billups, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, or Steve Nash. But aside from those four there isn't a point guard in the NBA I would say is head and shoulders above rafer. He was the most improved player in the NBA this past season and battled all season minus the strained hamstring towards the end of the season. A majority of the fans on this board thinks change is good, our role players were all very young and inexperienced and we lost our MVP and another solid starter yet still almost beat a solid Jazz team. With everyone minus our MVP we won 22 games in a row. No team has done that other than the lakers almost 30 years ago. Yet everyone is screaming to blow up our roster. We just added Depth in Joey Dorsey and perhaps Greene might be able to spell t mac next year for some quality minutes. I was all for getting rid of rafer a year ago, but he proved to me this year he belongs on our team as our starting point guard.
For people who say Kirk Hinrick is the answer right now... do anyone of you truly see Kirk having any success against Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker and other point guards in the west? Who would do better seriously Rafer or Kirk in this situation?
Derek Fisher has won how many championships as Laker point guard? Rajon Rondo has 3 players he can dish to that can score 30 plus points on any given night. Derek Fisher is proven. Rajon Rondo is in the east and is also a point that can actually dunk the ball has athleticism and hasn't been in the league that long yet to be fairly judged.
i agree with you on the barry situation, he would be a great addition. brings consistent high fg%. Bobby Jackson, Steve Francis, Brooks, and Chuck + 1st round pick for Hinrich
We might be alright as well for depth depending on the health of steve francis... and i know a lot of you say he is done old and washed up, but if you watch this, there is nothing old and washed up about it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=jAZYfB7AkAE
We all want Francis back like that but that was before he got injured.I would love Francis back but like they say hes getting old and the injury bugs bitting him.
That was before he got hurt during the 2007-2008 season, the season that just passed. He has some juice left, he could play smart like that consistently then you have a heck of a role player in Steve Francis bottom line. We will see but I wouldn't be 100% confident in his health.
Teams in the last 15 years have won championships with John Paxton, Avery Johnson, Derek Fisher, Rondo/dinosour Cassell/House trifecta, young error prone Tony Parker, and possibly the worst pair, Jason Williams/dinosor Gary Payton. Assuming Brooks improves to the slighest, Rafer/Brooks/B Jax compares with these other groups. I am not saying it is strong, or even average, and I would seeks to improve it, but it is hardly hopeless or an impossible block to overcome (e.g., like our PF situation has been until last year). Right now I believe a quality backup swingman is more imperative than upgrading at PG, though of course we always will look to achieve both. Interestingly, adding Barry does do both.
Can anybody stop them? You cant really stop them at all, you could fight fire with fire though and try to do more on the offensive side.. after all we have a pretty good team defense
