Tracy is one of the most talented & gifted basketball players in the world. Most of us on this board could hone our skills for years and never come close to being what he is as a basketball player. Yet instead of celebrating the God Given talent that he has been blessed with, people bash him for what he has not achieved. But the truth is, we have all failed at something. We failed to make sports teams in school, we failed to date the hottest female (or male if there are any female posters out there), we failed to get a promotion at work, etc. We have all failed to accomplish the ultimate goal, for whatever reason. But instead of us calling ourselves out for our own failures, or donating our salary because some feel like we didn't earn it, or demanding that our employer get rid of us for 2 wooden nickels, we make excuses or ignore our own shortcomings. But we don't allow our stars to have legitimate reasons for not living up to OUR expectations unless they are Yao Ming, David Carr, or Matt Schaub. And then we become so full of ourselves that we blast a young man for reaching out to help people who cannot help themselves. What Tracy is doing is selfless, honorable, and the right thing to do, much like the right basketball plays that he makes when he gets his teammates wide open looks but they don't cash in. At least with this assist, the basket will be scored. Thank you Tracy McGrady. And here is to your recovery and contributions on the court for the 2009-2010 Houston Rockets. #1 & #3 fan forever
That player in jersey #1....who is that? Tracy, I hope you can prove me wrong. But major props for your work in Darfur. That can never be tarnished.
My thing with this is...this wasn't a "someone I know has this so let me do this" charity like most celebs/athletes...this was something done because he gives a damn...big ups T-Mac #3.
Tmacs no doubt a solid citizen. Hope he recovers to for a little. Maybe people are more willing to trade for him then or we keep him until his contract expires. I would really like to see him come back and play like he used to just one more time. He is a pretty good player to watch when his body is right. I would like to see that again. Even if it ends up being in another jersey.
Sorry but Tmacs intentions are for his own good. It dosent matter what he does anymore. Anything to make him look better. He WILL always be a selfish person no matter what he does period! I'm tired of hearing his name!
I don't care what anybody says. Even the rockets fans on Chron.com diss T-Mac. Who cares if he's always hurt, he will always be one of my favorite players. The lame fans only like him when he's healthy and dunking on everybody. I like T-Mac even when he's on the bench. Hope he comes back healthy next season. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tw2SXbyfKrE&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Tw2SXbyfKrE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Wtf? So are oil and gas investments. 80% amortized over a 4 year period. 100% writeoff in the event of a dry hole. And with that type of investment/tax shelter, there's a potential return on investment. What's your point?? Please tell me you aren't trying to belittle such a noble effort with some lame offhand remark about charitable contributions being tax shelters...as if that's McGrady's true intent. If his intent was a selfish, monetary one, there are better ways to do it. Just give the man his damn credit, please!
Dikembe Mutombo - Over $15,000,000 towards the construction of the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Yao Ming - Started with a $2,000,000 deposit into his Foundation for the earthquake recovery effort in China’s Sichuan and Gansu provinces. Tracy McGrady - $70,000 so far (LINK) towards his foundation in support of Darfur refugees. His salary in 2009-2010 alone - $23,239,561, tops in the NBA. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'. He's got some more ground to cover before he puts his money where his mouth is.
Uh...first of all it was $75,000. Secondly, the article does NOT say that it is the ONLY financial contribution he has made. It just says that he made that contribution that day. Nowhere does it give a total amount of his contributions. Thirdly, since you want to be "just sayin", are you sayin how much Lebron, Kobe and DWade have contributed to the fund as well? They were all recruited by McGrady. Just sayin.
Whatever his reason for donating to the less fortunate shouldn't even matter. The FACT is the man is doing something to help. Take the hate-vision off buddy, its more selfish of you to hate him for an act like this.

This guy has done a lot of great stuff on and off the court. He plays always injured and tries to still play with all he's got. Lot's of fans ignore the fact how he's lead us to the playoffs multiple times and put us on his back, doing everything, played great defense, rebounded, dished it and was defiantly a go to scorer. Tracy is a top ten player in the playoffs. But this season he had to hang it up earlier because he knew he wasn't helping himself or the team, what he did really helped us out. But fans just think he gave up, when he needed micro surgery and shoulder surgery. It really surprises me how much hate this guy gets, really dissapointing.
I will always respect McGrady. He not only has done some amazing stuff for the Rockets, but for the people in the world. It seems like everyday, a new athlete is arrested or charged with some criminal act. You have never seen that out of McGrady and never will. Also, many athletes just give to charities so that people think they're generous souls. T-Mac gave to Darfur because he felt he had to. He also represents it with the new jersey number. He is an amazing person, and is one the most talented basketball players. He has a god given talent, and people bash him for it just because he tries his best. He should be acknowledged for his generous donations, and his effort to keep playing basketball. He has the money to retire now, but he wants to play, and help this Rockets team in their journey to an NBA title. I can see why some of you bash him for a decrease in production last year, but I saw some bashing him about his jersey change. Those people must not care about the people of the world, as he changed to represent Darfur. By the way, great post bigreg, very well put.
I applaud Tracy Mcgrady for what he's done for Darfur, He has been one of my favorite people on and off the court. Get well Tmac!
agreed, good stuff, man that season was painful. i remember we could not find a way to win without tmac
Haha yeah, unfortunately I read those comments on Feigen's blog you're referring to, all coming from that "Ralph" clown. Hopefully he was just trying to bait people. I'm surprised Feigen actually bothered to respond to that fool.
