Not to be insensitive, but this is Craig’s List. We are forced to rely on the author's statement that they are in the Marines. It is definitely not unprecedented for someone to concoct a story about being in the military in order to make their anti-war opinion carry more weight. I am not fundamentally disagreeing with her position, I’m just saying that I don’t feel comfortable accepting this as a real letter by a real marine without some confirmation.
If you truly hate this country and its people so much maybe you should head over to Canada or Mexico or go back home. Sadly though - I don't think you will find the people of those countries anymore "in touch with the world" as Americans. You sound like an educated person who follows world events. The general populace of ANY country (not just the US) does not. If you expect your average American to care a lot about world politics then you have overly high expectations. Most of us just care about making the mortgage payments and making sure our families are happy. I don't think that makes us close minded or arrogant or overly hypocritical - just human. Yes it is sort of contradictory because our Federal government may very well be the most meddlesome in the world. Maybe you have point that the average American should care more about world politics since we do vote for the very politicians that can exert so much influence throughout the world but Americans live 24 hour days just like the rest.
Screw that BS, if someone comes here and claims they have not had one positive experience to improve their low opinion of Americans, I don't want them in my country. I don't go to their country and b**** about how much it the people who live there suck ass. America, love it or leave it b****es.

I read this a few minutes ago and walked away, sort of unbelieving that I actually read this. Your contempt and attempts to belittle a soldier who risked their life is about the most craven, contemptible thing I can remember reading in recent memory. Seriously. As stated above, I don't know if this is a real account or not. But if it is real, then if I told you how your post makes me feel about you I would be banned from this site. I can't tell you how much this makes me despise you.
Hang in there Amel. If you live in Houston, try the inner loop or close in. Not all Americans are dumb, conservative or ignorant of the world. Bush and the conservatives are now on the run, though they have lots of money, their right wing media outlets like Fox and many working class Christians still vote against their economic interest. However, that could change too as they may come to realize that many rich conservos and many of their pastor/politicos care more about money than Christian principles.
Conquistador. See my reply to Amel. I did several hundred political asylum cases from El Salvador in immigration court. Lost the vast majority,of course. I feel your pain and that of San Miguel. Morazan, La Union etc. It was a shame how the US supported the death squads against the people. I have often thought of how they would have hunted my relatives and extended family for some of my political activities throughout the years if I had been in El Salvador. I am a near pacifiist, but when you protest peacefully and they gun down the demonstrators and then go after your extended family, I can see taking it to the hills. El pueblo unidos jamas sera vencido. Is it really that democratic in El Salvador at this time? I hear that deported or returned gang members from LA like the Salva Truca? ( No time to look it up)are a major problem. BTW I e-mailed you a few days ago. Did you get it?
You can be a liberal and have conservative friends. I'm a Republican and most of my friends are liberals. I consider most of my friends smart and well-read. We just happen to have differing opinions on certain things. Plenty of smart and dumb people on both sides. Sometimes people just have different points of view. Doesn't make the other stupid, evil, dumb, etc...
Yeah, that word "regrettable" is a harsh one... I'm not sure what to make of your "outrage" after re-reading this.
I thought this was a nice transitional touch: "Oh, while I'm good and worked up..." That really doesn't sound like a grieving woman who is burying her husband.
