He was mocking my post of mack brown never winning a national title, by saying fran would kill for a winning season when in reality he has one last year
"trip" great choice of word. A&M has really been disappointing this year. I had high hopes for Courtney Lewis becoming a great back this year, it just never happened. I didn't watch too many A&M games this year, but I guess Reggie never found a rhythm with the new corp of receivers.
They all had to make changes but in my opinion were already much better suited to be NFL QB's then Young is. The argument was that scrambling QB's get hurt (I might not have worded it the way I wanted to). My point was that even with better pocket prescence and better arms then Young these guys still got injured. The way Young runs, he may be a sitting duck for big hitting safeties and linebackers. I agree. Young stayed for his senior year because he wants to play the QB position. I'm not saying that he won't be able to either, just this years version wouldn't work well in the NFL.
It's tough to catch a pass from a QB that's sleeping with your girlfriend. It kind of takes the fun out of the game don't you think?
I bring up this point again - QB's who can throw and run are often better college QBs than those who can only drop back and pass. Anyone who watches college football understands that unlike the NFL, teams do not have top grade talent at all positions. When you have a scrambling QB, he can make up for inexperienced or untalented offensive linemen, WR's, RB's or even bad coaching. Eric Crouch, Tee Martin, Charlie Ward are all examples of QBs who were great college players whose multi-dimensional attacks led their teams to national championships. Vince Young is just as good if not a better college QB than Leinart because unlike Leinart, Young can play with less talent around him and still carry his team to victory. The only reason UT even has a chance against USC is because of Young. Even without Leinart, USC could still rely on Bush and Lendale White to carry that team and still be successful.
Well, looks like you guys have a stud ready to take Reggie's place, so you guys should be on your way up. I wonder who the new defensive leaders are going to be now that Appel is graduating.
Good post, but I want to expand on it. A QB that can both run and throw allows the offense to simplify their scheme. You look at UT, you know exactly how they are going to attack you. They can run the ball with their RBs and VY can certainly run the ball on passing plays after he checks off his receivers. You don't see them running a lot of the more exotic passing plays because they don't need to. Why risk turnovers when you can get 1st downs off of low-risk plays? Having a simple offense, that allows inexperienced players to pick up much easier. I honestly thought UT was doomed when they lost their 3 top receivers last year, but UT switched to a very simple offensive gameplan and they got to a BCS bowl. I think VY deserves the Heisman for that alone because he makes everyone on the team better than they really are.
In my opinion, this is it. Vince Young creates enormous problems for college defenses because he's as good as any RB and WR in the open field. To piggyback on my earlier post, college defenses aren't as sophisticated or as talented to stop multi-dimensional QB's. It's not like you can just blitz them like a traditional drop back QB or disguise coverages. You have to account for 1 additional playmaker on the field. The talent difference between this UT team and those in the past with Cedric Benson, Chris Simms, Major Applewhite, Roy Williams is just 1 player - Vince Young.
everyone can call vince young whatever they want and matt leinart whatever they want but one thing is for damn sure...they are both winners and that is why reggie mcneal doesn't even come into the same sentence. as vince young, because look at the records. i know aggie fans are going to say the cast around reggie wasn't as good, whatever. other than david thomas there really isn't a receiver on the texas team the last 2 seasons that could considered "great". vince young WINS. period.
*** An ex-UT's P.O.V. *** McNeal is a very good QB in college. If he had the right mix of talent at A&M, he could've gone very far. He really matured last year and grew into his spot. His lack of production is probably due to the WR corp graduating last off-season. He is very athletic and has a strong arm and I think he has a shot at being a starting QB at the next level. He may be a tier below than Young and Leinart, but I don't think he's really THAT far off. He plays a more complex scheme in A&M and he showed success last year. He showed that he can zip the ball, create outside the pocket and have pretty good accuracy on short passes. In fact, I'd rate McNeal as a slightly more developed passer than VY. Also, if you think UT has a wretched WR corp, you should see what McNeal has been working with this whole year.
AMEN to that! Reggie is a better developed passer and could have and should have produced more than he did, i believe he will in the future
I'm going to stick with the Redding vs Oswalt comparison. There's no reason Reggie shouldn't be having as good a year as Vince - he's fast, has a strong arm - he has all the tools to be a great college QB. He just hasn't put those tools together. He has a strong arm, but he throws the ball as hard as he can on every play - rather than showing any touch, and is wild in doing so. As a result, he's an ineffective passer. He's fast, but he is rattled by contact. One good hit and McNeal takes himself out of the game running wise - going down yards in front of opposition, shying away from any contact at all. As far as Young vs Leinart, there's no comparison over their careers - Leinart has had the much better college career than Young. Much. However, this year Young has raised his game to Leinart's level - which is why they're both nominated for just about every major award they can be nominated for. The only real difference between them has been their style - Leinart is a surgeon from the pocket, and Young is explosive through the air and on the ground.
I think ya'll will too, McGee and Bennett looked pretty good out. Serious question for any Aggs: How much longer does Franc have over in College Station? I know he's got a big contract that might be out of buy-out range. Do ya'll want to see him back?
