I heard John McClain (covers the NFL for the Houston Chronicle) on 610am a couple of weeks ago. He said "The only people projecting Vince Young as something other than a quarterback are fans who don't know what they are talking about. Every NFL scout I talk to says he will be a quarterback. They want him to stay in college for another year to work on his technique." I guess you are one of those fans.
the thing about reggie mcneal is, i'm not even sure he's the 2nd best quarterback in the state of texas......now you all can decide who could be better than him.....
I've had 2 days to think about this game and I'm kinda torn. I'm a very proud aggie and have been extremely dissappointed w/ this season, but the way the youngsters have grown and competed these last 2 games gives me hope, but I still believe we never should have gotten to this point. I still believe Fran is the right coach for this team and for whatever reason, things haven't worked out like everyone expected his 3 years here. His track record speaks for itself and he has been a turnaround coach everywhere he's been but at A&M. I guess what I'm really upset about w/ his tenure is that he couldn't do what Carrol at USC, Stoops at ou, Weis at ND and even brown at tu, which was do what it takes to win right away. Take the players the other coach left behind and win with them. For whatever reason Fran couldn't do that w/ RC's guys and this year shows he still wasn't able to. Whether it was strictly a talent issue w/ the upperclassmen, an attitude issue or a little bit of both, A&M just hasn't put it all together. With likely coaching changes and an easier non conference to get everyone on the same page at the beginning, hopefully that will get us going. This is off the topic of what I previously wrote but this has been on my mind and it actually makes me sick to hear all the fellatio going on w/ vince young. I think u guys are still living vicariously through his performance in the rose bowl. What did the guy have like 4 rushing touchdowns. He hardly threw the ball at all and everyone fell in love w/ him. He was horrid last year throwing and just got back to avg this year. Don't get me wrong, he is perfect for tu offense; I mean look at the results, but I really don't see him being a great nfl qb. He is fast in college, defenses in the nfl are faster than college. He's wiry and strong and has been able to avoid injury in college, but defenses are bigger, faster and stronger and vince is a large target and is sure to get popped more in the pros. The sip oline has been together for a while now and have great talent and chemistry. They are a great college line and helped his success tremendously. Most of u sips think Vince is so great, so that must mean he will be drafted early and that would be to a bad team who most likely doesn't have a great o-line, thus even causing him to struggle more. Just recently, the sips went against the worst passing defense team in college and broke out with what, 179 yards passing; a third of that went to the flats to the fullback. Not exactly the kind of lofty numbers an nfl team is wanting to invest w/ a top 10 draft pick. Also, he didn't get the nickname Radio for nothing. I'm EXTREMELY interested to see what his wonderlic score will be. He doesn't do progressions and his offense is very simple, he just has a great supporting cast. I'm not going to bust out the Reggie vs Vince crap. I honestly would be viewed as a homer picking Reggie and no one would actually take me seriously. But in the last 4 years when the aggies had reggie, and have played against tu, tu has had the much better team. If any of you myopic sips can't see that reggie would have looked much better w/ your team and not the aggie team he has had to play w/, then there is no hope for u being objective. Will a team who wants to move to a more of a read option and run for the first down when nothing is open want him? Of course, Vick has been successful as a duel threat but in the nfl, u have to prove u can pass and vince's passing still isn't good. Can he improve yeah, but will he...we'll see.
hint on the second best college QB in the state of texas....look about 30 minutes outside of austin................
Have you watched any Texas games besides the A&M game? I have no problem with people arguing that his passing comes from wide open receivers (although many of those guys are open because the opposition is so concerned with spying on Vince to keep him from running), but this argument that he can't throw is just weird. Most of his passes go down the field - very few of the short junk UT threw with Simms for whatever reason. Here are the stats: http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?div=4&rpt=IA_playerpasseff&site=org Even after the A&M game, Vince is ranked #3 in passing efficiency - Quinn is #4 and Leinert is #5. Vince averages more yards per pass than any other QB in the country, meaning he's not throwing a lot of dump off junk passes. In addition to all his rushing TDs, he has just one less passing TD than Leinart - in 80 fewer attempts. He does throw more INTs, though. Vince may not be able to pass at the NFL level at this point, but he's a great passing college QB and throws the ball all over the field.
Vince is not only the best runner as far as QBs go, he also is second is passing efficiency. Not only is Leinart a less efficient passer, but the guy has only scrambled for 31 yards ALL SEASON. That's a whopping 0.8 per.
Nice argument. So anyone that thinks Young is better than McNeil is a homer? Any person that remotely watches any kind of college football would know that VY is the much better QB than Reggie, even the non-delusional Agg fans can see that. I actually like McNeil and don't have any problem w/ Texas AM, but the truth is that there is a reason why we're Rose Bowl Champions and are on the way to the NC Game, there is a reason why VY is a Heisman candidate and a O'Brien finalist. Thre is also a reason why ya'll our 5-6 after actually being ranked in the preseason. Like Bassfly posted, you really should worry about your Aggies rather than bashing VY just to make yourself feel a little better. It's kinda funny how the only way Young haters can put down him down is by saying he isn't as good as Leinart, which maybe true, but it isn't actually that much of a putdown, Leinart is really good and probably is the BEST QB in the nation.
Major, I saw plenty of sip games this year. With no cable and just your typical ABC, CBS, NBC etc stations, all I could do on Saturdays was watch college football. Vince young did have some good games passing, I never said he didn't, but he isn't consistent enough for NFL. Vince has made some difficult legitimate NFL throws, but many of those difficult throws were either intercepted, thrown behind or thrown at their feet. He throws like shaq shoots free throws...heavy. The reason he had such an efficient season is b/c so many of his throws were safe. His favorite targets are those guys in the flats and the TE thomas. Like I said, his passing got to avg this year, whereas past years it was a joke. He actually got the ball in good spots to his recievers this year and they made plays. And wow, his improvement to avg ability in throwing w/ a pathetic big 12 this year, and an upperclassman heavy squad and no wonder they are undefeated.
Only our O-line (and starting TE) have more than 2 years experience. Other than David Thomas (Sr.) or Quan Cosby (Freshman), our Top WR's are all sophmores and Ramonce Taylor is a converted RB which is why Vince has to run to gain yards. He's not playing with Roy Williams, BJ Johnson, and Sloan Thomas. RB is split between Ramonce Taylor and Jamaal Charles - True Freshman. Only 3 of our starting 11 are seniors. To say he's playing with an upperclassman heavy squad is a lie.
This has really gotten funny. A horn fan moaning about lack of talent around the QB. Now that is a good belly-laugh. Hey riet, the offensive line is kinda important, don't you think? Sincerely, Dave Carr
Briles never coached Kolb, he left for TTU before Kolb ever got to high school. But Kolb grew up playing in Briles' system in middle school and in high school, despite Briles abscence. Neely was asked to become a WR or TE in the new system, he balked at it and walked.
I never said the offense wasn't talented. I said they weren't upperclassman heavy. It's just another myth created to make the haters feel better about themselves. Saying the starters are upperclassman heavy was a lie. WR's are also important, don't you think? Sincerely, Corey Bradford
Why does the NFL thing even matter? First, it's a discussion of college QBs and how they play in college. Second, he's not going to be in the NFL for another 18 months or so - he's not supposed to be a polished NFL QB at this point. So your contention is that he throws lots of passes into the flats, and the receivers make huge plays after - so much so that Vince averages more yards per pass than any other QB in the entire country? Seems like maybe Leinart and others should be doing that then, if it's so effective. If there is a weak part of the UT team, it's considered the receiving group, so it's not like other teams don't have the receivers to do it.
